This doesnt seem right....

Messing around attempting to get my pile of edelbrock 1406 to run a little better. i wanted too see how far out the mixture screws in the front were.. and there almost 4 turns out!!

I did some reading around and every where i see it looks like most run them about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out....

I think this would explain why it runs sooo dang rich and smells of raw gas..

anyone else have anything too add?

Im not a carb guy by any means.

BTW my idle is around 600rpm

who was the last one to adjust the tuning?

If you have nothing more than a screwdriver and a couple of ears, turn each of them in until your idle starts to fall off or drop; turn slowly and give it a moment or two for your change to take affect. Once you slowly turn them in a little at a time and the idle starts to lower or stumble, slowly back out until it straightens up. That'll put you really darn close to right on.

Otherwise go pick up a good quality vacuum gauge (usually around $20 or so, I'm happy w/ my Accutron from Sears) and hook it up to manifold vacuum. Repeat the above except tune the screws to maximum vacuum at idle.

Edelbrocks are exceedingly easy to work on.

I toyed around in the truck today and its deff got alot more get up and go. Still stumbling hard when it hit the secondaries i think the jets are too small.

I ddint get a chance to fine tune the carb as i was helping a friend move.

will see what tomorrow brings maybe even tonight if the rain lets off...

Well i finally sat down this morning and tuned the carb in. Runs better now but i still get a haze when i free rev the truck cant tell if its oil or fuel. Truck doesnt have the eye water rich smell at stops anymore and really gets up out of its own way till the clutch slips lol.

Still stubles into the secondaries but not nearly as bad. All in all the truck is running good. Was beatin on it a little today so idk how well my mileage will look after that lol..

Still a little hard to start tho seems like there is no fuel in the carb.

Im going to be replacing the cap and rotor here soon as i have a had an intermittent miss for about the last 8 months at idle and the only this i havent replaced is the cap and rotor

Make sure it's all brass, none of that aluminum stuff. I've had good luck w/ borg warner.

What's the haze exactly? Blue smoke? Black smoke? Or white?

On the stumble into secondaries do you get a puff of black smoke or does it kind of cough and sputter or even pop through the carb?

My Edelbrock will drop 1-2 mpg across a tank from flogging it.

It's hard to tell what color the smoke is into the secondaries. I have not been able to see any so far. It just falls on its face like its gonna die and then after a few seconds comes back up

The smoke on free rev is white with a slight slight blue tint.

I have a mallory uni-lite dizzy I have had a tough time finding a new cap and rotor.

I have driven roughly 75 maybe 90 miles on this tank and I'm at the 1/4 tank mark.

Hah, im the PO. Screws were turned out until it ran right............ before I fixed the timing chain, timing gears, fuel pump and all that jazz. had it hooked up to the 5 gas machine when I did it and set so the 5 gas machine said 14.7.

the jets are too small, its about 14:1 across the board at full throttle so up it probably 2-3 jet sizes and it will be good.

I didnt change anything to the carb since I bought it. I threw a different coil and opened up the plug gap and that's about it.

The truck ran so rich at idle it made you eyes water. And I have and people follow behind and tell me the truck hazed and smelled like raw gas going down the road.

I have a Holley that I want to put in but idk yet. Imma give this eddy one more chance with different jets

Sounds like your valve seals are letting a little oil seep past.
