About to Piece Together Hydro Assist

I've got a 79 Cherokee that will be running HMMWV 37" Radials and will be a weekend cruiser, mild trail and camping rig.

Before I tore into it, the steering pump was squealing up a storm, so I definitely plan to replace it.

I'd like to go ahead and go with hydro assist from the start. I had a setup on a Chevy on one tons and loved it.

I've been searching around, but I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.

I've got a low mileage steering box off an 85 CJ10(same as Waggy, J10) that I could drill and tap. Or should I go ahead and get a J20 box and drill and tap it?

Should I just go with a stock J20 steering pump?

And should I get newer O-ring pump and box, or stay with the older style on both?

New style j20 box is my vote. Get a stock pump and see how it does. If its not up to par, do the west texas mods to the piston. If that still isnt enough, psc pump and call it a day. I dont think you will have any problems with the stock pump though.

Is a J20 pump better than J10/Cherokee pump?

Pretty sure all the pumps were the same. Maybe bigger valve or something.

I think the PS pumps for FSJ's are all the same, minus the fittings.

I'm running a '78 J20 box on my wagggy and J10. Both are tapped, but I'm running plugs in the waggy (plans for future assist). The J10 has a 1.5" x 8" PSC ram. Work great. Could use a little better pump, but it's fine.

Here are some good pics I took of where to properly tap the boxes.

Drilled and tapped the J20 box with a 7/16th drill bit and a 1/4" NPT tap.

Is there any benefit of picking up a post 79 pump and gear box?
Or should I just go with the older style?

Only difference is new boxes are o-ring fittings while old are flare fittings. Personal preference really.
