6.2 gmc diesel....price?
I found an 85' 6.2 4spd GMC bread truck for sale. 170K on it. How much should I expect to pay for such a beast? Would like to do a swap to my 90' GW. Thanks in advance.

Price/value may vary biased on you area specifically. But around here a running P30 van goes in the ballpark of $1500-2000. That would be one of the 80s and in good running driving condition. However 6.2/6.5L NA running pullout engines sell on Craigslist for $400-1000.

Don't know how it works in PA but out here the dsl box trucks are pretty expensive. Seller is either targeting small bis people like a plumber, electrician etc or they tell you the reason they want so much is because after the eng is removed to can get big bucks for the body as scrap. That's their sales pitch anyway. You'd prolly pay less for a 6.2 pickup or Burb. Couple years ago I bought an 84 2WD/AT 6.2 C-20 w/130,000 on the clock for $1,900. Only issue was a seat seam was splitting. Truck is so nice I left it alone and just drive it. In PA I would think a rusted out 80's era truck/burb would be an easy find. Neighbor had a early 80's 6.2 burb he brought from MI to WA when he moved here. Body was horrible rusted but ran good, he sold it here for $800. If a 6.2 is what you want you'll find one. We don't have the rust issues you folks do so at least out here there are still lots of pick ups/burbs still around and in use.

I bought a spare 6.2 from a p20 van for $100 running. The guy wanted a 350 in his van. Patience is key to finding them cheap. The 6.2 that is in my waggy I basically got for free. Just FYI some blocks are better than others. If you are going to pay anything for a 6.2 tell the seller you want to inspect the mains for cracks. Keep in mind that a p-van 6.2 uses a different thermostat housing that may or may not make conversion easier depending on your radiator choice.

I've been watching for Isuzu cube vans here. I see many with the Jatco trans gone bad (pre '99) but they use a version of the AW4 after that and I'm hoping to graft one to the earlier motor (later motor seems to toss rods about the 200,000 mile mark)
I want the drivetrain for the '68 Travelall (divorced tcase) and I'll use the van body for a rolling shed (I'll stick a functional motor in for the fall swap meet)

OK I know this is leaving the OP's topic, but Carnuck you should go over to ih8mud forums and look at some of the articles those guys have written using the A440-style transmissions joined to the AW auto from the 4bd. They're very similar to the AW4, so it might have some pointers/ideas for you in there. Again sorry for the highjack.

Carolinaboy is right about patience, and Chumley360 about where you are. It seems that 6.2 prices are all about geography. Some guys and magazine writeups say that they're dirt cheap and you can find a running truck for $500 or less. Not so here in the Pacific NW.
I haunted CL for months, occasionally seeing something interesting vaporize in hours. I finally lucked onto a complete, low miles engine from a '93 P30 for $500. I think a 599 block was well worth the wait and more than $500. But honestly, I would have bought almost anything for $500 by the time my engine popped up. Patience (and checking CL a few times a day) is key. Good luck.
