AMC401 w/dual quads on Offy intake
Just built it for a buddy of mine. If nothing else, there is a certain cool factor to it....

I guess that the offy intake is the only AMC intake for dual carbs still available ?
Do you think that you get a few more hp with this one ?

"I guess that the offy intake is the only AMC intake for dual carbs still available ?" YES, unless you can find a used Cross Ram or Tunnel ram.
"Do you think that you get a few more hp with this one ?" NO. It has been proven that a Torker intake with a single 4 BBL carburetor will out perform the dual quad Offy.

I would prefer Holleys myself but it is not my engine. Adapter plates would have to be made to fit Holleys to the manifold. The center to center distance for the carbs is too close to fit Holleys as it is.
The headers are just for the starting stand... The owner is actually going to run the Free Flow exhauxt manifolds.

Don't get me wrong, I like Hedmans... It usually sparks some discussion to roll your eyes by.
401s are a beautiful thing.

We are going to dyno it next week just to get the carbs set right. He is going to run stock exhaust manifolds so, I kinda expect the numbers to be a little low. I am surprised that no one has asked about the cam.... It is not that big, it is a Isky 280HL. The engine is a cast piston 401 with '70 heads. (Multi angle valve job and I just cleaned up the ports a little bit) The compression ratio should be close to 10.2:1.
Any guesses on HP and torque??

300/400 Does Offy make a single 4BBL intake, or am I imagining that?
Nevermind, a little quality time with Summit and i answered my own question.

Sounds nice. I would live to find an engine stand like that so I could run an engine and tune it up/break it in before installing in the car.

The intake is kind of a wildcard to me, I'd have to guess 325hp/415tq based on a very similar build but with an air gap. Looks and sounds great as usual. What is this going in? Should be a great all-around piece.

The engine is going in to a '70 AMX.
Yes, Offenhauser used to make a few different 4BBL intake manifolds for AMC's. The Dual Quad, 360 equal flow, Sonic Dual Port and even a spread bore intake.

In July '08, my wife and I attended the 39th Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY.
While there, we strolled through the swap meet and saw this intake.
I know nothing more about it, but am presenting it here to the group.

I wonder where that thing ever went. Someone went through a lot of trouble to make that plenum just for show off purposes..

With ported Exhaust Manifolds

I grind out the smog tube embossments on the inside.

With the Edelbrock Shorty Headers

I hope to to a real A to B comparison between the two on the dyno this Monday.

Results:
Free Flow Manifolds (ported)::::: 366.2 Hp @5050 401 #/ft Torque @ 3800
Edelbrock Shorty Headers:::::::: 368.7 Hp @5250 411 #/ft Torque @ 4300
Hedmond Long Tube Headers::::: 382.0 Hp @5050 430 #/ft Torque @ 4300
Ghinmi, you were pretty close. In my humble opinion I think that the Offy intake hurt the horsepower. I believe that a Torker or Air Gap with a single 800 Holley would have gained another 20 HP at least. Fun stuff! I started a new thread on the Header Comparo..

What vehicle is this going in? I scanned the thread but sorry if I missed it. Will it have open element air cleaners or any kind of ram air setup? I've been wondering and reading a bunch lately on open element cfm flow vs. cold air intakes, dual snorkels and all that. Just curious what this engine will use.
