No Power to rear window dash switch

The dash switch for my rear window quit working, of coarse when it was down. so i was trying to jump it out to get it back up. Well now i can't get the window up. I checked the main hot to the back of the plug with my test light and I'm not getting any power (yes I checkd the fuse, twice). Any ideas??

Any particular year? You should update your signature with your rigs particulars for a faster or accurate response

Its a 79 cherokee sport NT with a 360, low range and a mile marker part time. I had to repair the tailgate when i got it. The gate has worked fine until a few days ago. Had to wiggle the dash switch in up but other than that no problems. The window went down tried up and it would't work. checked with test light tonight had no power to back of plug.

I dont have schematics for your year, does it have a safety switch? Also squirt a bunch of wd40 into the dash switch and cycle it many times, could simply be a corroded contact.

Sorry i cant be more help

Ok i'll try that but shouldn't there be power to the main power wire (red) to the back of the plug that connect to the dash switch? I had the guage cluster out the same day are there any connections there i may have not connected well that could affect the power wire.

Is anything else not working? Like seats or windows? ( as i said im clueless about your year)

Later rigs have things called fusible links, which are short green wires connected directly to the starter solenoid, They act as fuses, but are a smaller diameter wire inside a melt proof covering. You have to carefully pinch every. Millimeter of the link and see if there is a burned out section

You can buy replacements at nappa

ok. I'll check the wires. The radio and clock have not worked since i have owned it. I don't have power seats or windows other than the rear. I'm gonna pull the guage cluster back out and check all the connections. Thanks for the help. If anyone else out there has any ideas all suggenstions are appreciated.

You said you worked on the rear widow when you got the vehicle what did you do? You may have left some wires loose in there and the window or gears ate the wires.

I installed a new a window regulator motor and rewired it and by passed the safety switch. The only thing is i don't have a rear window switch used to open the gate with the key. didn't seem to matter since its been working for a while now and just quit. i ordered the switch serehill sent my the link to and if i can pickup a dash switch from jeepnpete i'm gonna install everything back correctly. i just don't understand why i lost power to the main hot wire coming into the dash switch. Its the red wire under the dash on mine.

That goes back to the tailgate, so I'd check the connector on the driver's side, inside of the frame near the tailgate

Is the window still down? If so you may be able to take a 12/18 volt cordless battery and use directly to the motor with 2 jumper wires. I used this many times to put a power window up/down. Just a temporary fix to get it closed up. Good luck.

Are you saying the red wire goes back to the tailgate? I thought the red wire comes from the fuse block, not sure. Its a little wet here so I'm waiting out the weather to check this stuff.

Power flows to the front I think.

I'm pretty certain, the power to the window motor goes to the tailgate switch first. Then it flows to the interior switch and back again. If that tailgate mounted switch loses power, the interior switch will not work.

But I may be wrong, mine is a '90 and it worked that way. I did the simple military grade toggle replacement, works great.

Rear Window Issues

I had a bunch of issues with my rear window and we all agreed it had to be a ground but we couldn't diagnose it. When I was under the waggy I saw a ground coming out of the harness to the frame near the fuel filler neck. I cleaned up the contact surface and replaced the screw and now everything works great. Your experiences may vary...

I did replace the gas tank. I may have loosened a ground but the window did go down. I don't think mine even has the switch in the tailgate. I'm gonna check that. The PO may have removed it and by passed the gate switch. Jeepinpete is checking on a dash switch for me and i already ordered the toggle serehill suggested. Worse comes to worse I'll order another toggle and rewire the whole thing. Great info from everyone, thankyou. Keep it coming.

well checked the tailgate there is no switch for the key switch. so it has been by-passed. I did get the window up. checked the wires in the gate and had power. And apparently i didn't check the fuses good enough. I didn't realize the switch has a fuse also. So yes i feel like a DA, as i should. This has been a learning experience, I sprayed the dash switch with WD and got it working also. I would still like a NOS dash switch so if anyone has it let me know. The toggle switch serehill suggested came in today so I'm gonna install it in the tailgate and get that working.
