Another FSJ in the Stable

Well I went up to see it this morning, the wife gave me her blessing, and bought it.

http://kalispell.craigslist.org/cto/2690430182.html

So far here is what I know. R/F window is down and sounds like motor will run from master switch but nothing from r/f switch and no movement. Gate window is down and no one home from dash switch or key. Body is super straight other than a small dent at front of l/r wheel. No rust. Paint is nice. Wood grain is almost perfect. Some of the wood grain framing trim is coming loose in places and it's missing the r/r upper quarter piece. l/h rear wind deflector trim cap is damaged and center wood grain sticker is gone. Missing stainless upper molding for w/s. Needs a couple of center caps for wheels. Did manage to get a couple revolutions from the starter before it quit and relay started to machine gun so engine is not seized and oil and coolant look good. Drivers door will not open from inside or out. Acts as if locked and door lock will not work. Head liner has bubbling here and there. Missing mirror control switch. Cig. lighter, a couple marker lights, and interior lights not operating. Everything else that could be tested with motor off operated. Tires are about 90% but white letters not white walls.

So on my way home I purchased a battery and starter. I hope to get back up to install them this weekend and drive it home then I'll attack the window problems and go from there.

It looks as though everything is oem other than a short funny little bug guard that just goes across the center snout of the hood and there are four screw holes on the face of the passenger side of dash pad like maybe a grab handle had been installed (was this oem?) and there is a little black light hanging from the very back of the headliner that doesn't look oem.

I agree. A good buy at $500.

I love the seller's description: "Runs well when in running condition"

Thanks all. Any suggestions on vendors for the wood grain molding or headliner?

Went up Sunday afternoon. Installed the starter and battery. Found the starter I took off had a NAPA sticker on it so it wasn't her first. Poured a little fuel in the carb. and it started on like the 2nd or 3rd revolution. Expected it to stall but it stayed running. Pine cones and needles on the engine and all. After about three min. it did stall but it felt pretty good, rough idle and all. Fuel gauge was below empty so not knowing if it worked I poured in about 6 gal. and dribbled a little more in the carb. and she fired right up and stayed running and gas gauge showed about a quarter. Drove about 40 miles home in the cold with two windows down, the headlight war. chime dinning, and a single blown speaker trying to make music.with a stop to fill the gas tank with non-ethanol fuel.

Got home and ran the 4x4 in and out, and all worked, but transfer case shifter is close to impossible getting in and out of high and low. Really had to work. Also when shifting trans. from R to D or visa-versa it would hesitate going into gear or not go into gear unless shifter was moved around. Figured it may be low in fluid and/or linkage needs adjusted. I had to let it sit for a few days.

Yesterday I took the tires from 20psi to 35psi all the way around, got the rear window up, filled a trash can half full with cans, french fries, receipts, bottle caps, silverware, marbles, canning food jars, and toys, replaced some blown fuses, and took it for a 4 mile spin.
Noticed the trans. again. Got two miles out. Turned around and about 1/2 a mile back lost the trans. in the dark. Had a buddy come out and tow me back. Found rubber trans. cooler line had blown off. Bought new hose and fluid today. Hope to have her hosed and filled tomorrow. Next on the list will be the R/F window (motor runs from either switch but glass not moving). Then L/F door. Door will not open from inside or out and the window is not working. Seems like the lock system is buggered up. May have to pull the drivers seat just to get the door panel off.

Sweet deal! I hope you didn't roast the transmission though.

I have the upper center windshield trim, and center caps. IM me if you're interested...I have no idea what shipping would be. I may have some other stuff you may be interested in too. I'd need a pic of the center caps you do have so I can match them up.

The passenger window sounds like the tape broke. I have no suggestions for the driver's door other than spraying the seat bolts with PB Blaster from underneath the truck if you have to go that route. If you don't you'll run the risk of breaking the bolts trying to remove them. AMHIK.

Thanks for the input. Found another issue. When installing the new cooler hose I found that the straight radiator nipple on the drivers side, which is what the hose came off of, is all but touching the steering box adjuster bolt. Can't install the hose and clamp without flexing the radiator to the right. I don't see anything that's been changed or modified. Can anyone tell me if it should have a straight nipple on the drivers side radiator and if it's almost against the steering box? I think there is enough flexing/rubbing going on that this may have cause the hose to come off. The right side has a 90 degree nipple and it's line goes to what looks like a factory trans. cooler in front of the radiator and condenser, then it comes back down to the hard return line. If this is incorrect I'd like to change it now. I would have to loosen or remove the radiator to attempt a 90 degree fitting on drivers side because the steering box is too close to rotate one to thread in and I'm afraid the base of the 90 may touch the steering box then. I can't remember the last time I used the words, nipple, hard, rubbing, and flexing in one paragraph.

Maybe the steering box has been replaced with a non-standard one? Someone else will have to chime in on this one...I know there are several mounting holes on the radiator brackets...maybe it's possible someone installed the radiator using the wrong holes?

The only thing I can suggest is look and see if you can move the radiator up at all...the lip of the upper tank should be just barely below the top of the core support. Meaning, the upper tank of the radiator should stick up above the "shelf" in front of it. Makes no sense, but I hope you get what I mean. I have no issues with the trans cooler nipples clearing the steering box.

Mark, You hit the nail on the head! I too was to lazy and copied to a new thread in hopes for a quick answer and I got it. It was so subtle. Lay under it I noticed a radiator mounting bolt missing from the right side bottom and it is missing the fan shroud but it looked factory otherwise and correctly installed until I got up top and noticed the upper radiator hose was laying on the a/c compressor with a zip tie holding a piece of rubber for insulation. Radiator cap height looked correct. Then I noticed the right top was ever so slightly lower than the left. It looks like when it was out last the PO installed the right hand side one hole too low. I believe when I raise it it will create the necessary gap I need at the nipple. Good news is trans. seems ok now that it has fluid.

Next I need to flush the coolant and replace the t-stat and temp sensor. Gauge only barely makes it into the normal mark. Any suggestions on what the best t-stat temp would be for an old 360?

Well, making a little progress. Shoveled out dirt. Fixed lights, fuses, vacuum leak, timed and adjusted carb. Disassembled right front door for window fix. Started adjusting doors. Started removal of drivers seat to access door panel for removal for door latch repair. Here are a few before pics.

You got a real deal there. Looks great! For that price I would have expected a thrashed interior at least.
