First post, J10 questions pics added post 19
Hello all, my name is Dave and a little history about me before I ask my tech questions. I learned to drive in a 52 Willys truck, bought my first CJ2a when I was 15, and have owned 2 CJ7's a CJ5, XJ, and now am the happy owner of a 1977 J10.
The J10 has a bone stock 258, dana 44's, T150 tranny (?) and a Dana 20 transfer case. The old girl is rusting badly around the fenders and the bed is swiss cheese, but the cab is in good shape. I plan to replace the bed, fenders and paint it myself, but it may take some time. It has Super Swamper 34x11.5x15's.
To the questions now....
1. Valve noise. I get a tapping after it warms up. I have retarded my timing, and it helped some, but when I gas it at 2000 rpm in 3rd gear, I really notice it. I run Rotella 15w40. Any ideas? (oil pump, loose valves, etc). It has new plugs.
2. I don't really like the T150, and my CJ5 had a T176 that I really liked and trusted. Are they the same length and does the Dana 20 Transfer case bolt up to the T176?
3. Does anyone know where I can get a 34 inch spare? I have NEVER even seen a 34 inch tire before I got this truck.
4.How about a paper catalog for parts?
5. Front turn/park lights. Do any others fit in the valence instead of spending a fortune on OEM?
Okay, that is enough for now. My wallet jumped out of my pocket and is running down the road. Here is a pic of my new baby.

A newbie who gets our need for pics! Thought it would never happen. Although a few more won't hurt. Welcome to the insanity...err...fun...no...both from California. I don't know about a paper parts catalog, but BJ's Offroad is a great site for parts. And Team Grand Wagoneer too. And to help with your front turn/parking lights, look here http://www.bjsoffroad.com/CartGenie/prod-446.htm. $55 for both assemblies seems like a good price to me. And brand new. But if you check the For Sale section of the forum you should be able to find some there as well. Good luck!

I'd have a good look at the push rod ends and the rockers for wear. Lotsa 258's out there with noisy valve trains that continue to run for years. Keep an eye on the oil level, they can be notorious leakers at the valve cover, rear main seal, cracks in the block where the oil press sender screws in.

Welcome to THE forum! What took so long for the first post?
If you put a tape on the 34s, you may find that some 33s will do for a spare. I would be more concerned about the size if it was a QuadraTrac, but not so much with the D20.

more pics to come
but out of respect for the old girl, I shot her best side. BJ's offroad is a good place, but I really want a paper copy of a catalog, it gives me good ideas. 4wd hardware has a good one for CJ's , but I have had NO LUCK with a J Truck catalog.
The only thing she leaks is 90W from the Tranny, and it is time for a new seal kit. I would hate to do that if I can just replace it with a T176. I am amazed that it does not leak oil, and she runs pretty cool. Last week it was really hot here in SW Missouri, several days of 104-108 degree heat.
If this helps anyone with my quest to rebuild this, I plan on putting a MC 2100 carb on it, and possibly doing a distributor/ignition upgrade when I get the money. I also want to put A/C in her, but that is pretty low on the priority list. First step is the valve clatter and the carb.
As far as this being my first post since I signed up, I wanted to do some research before I just asked stupid random questions.

Welcome
Nice looking truck! Always good to see another Missourian on here. Mine is quiet but leaks like a mofo, yours is noisy and no leaks.

Cool truck.. In the picture it looks like a large lizard is stuck to the tread on the front drivers tire.
Pretty sure its not...but weirder things come with used FSJ's.
Welcome.

Help With Parts
Dave,
Welcome. It is always good to see another member join in the Missouri area.
I may be able to help you with a set of front turn signals, as well as a 34 inch spare.
There are several other members on here from the local area that can assist you with used parts, as well.

Thanks, Jeep Hero. I live pretty close to SMORR, but have never been there. I will send you a pm later.
Paul, thanks for the links, but I was looking for a catalog for parts, not a manual. Ebay tires are not worth it with the shipping. I will check out the other links. Thank you.

I didn't know what they had for your vehicle, but they often have ligature in addition to shop manuals, such as sales brochures, owners manuals, etc., figured you might get lucky there.
As for the tires, 34" aren't very common, so the chance you find an actual 34 local to you, not real good. I would focus more on 33"'s and 35"'s, you might find one that measures the same as the tires you have now. Check Craigs list if you havent yet.

I would like to suggest a flat bed instead of all the time money and trouble of a bed. mine has been very useful and a lot less care taken when i go in the woods.
I have the same tires on my j10. to replace exactly you're looking at around 200 buck. Just go get a used 33" or 35" for 20 bucks and be done.
Good luck

The T-150 was only used in the CJs. A '77 J-10 has a T-15. They are different - the T-150 is a Ford passenger car transmission made by Tremec, adapted to Jeep use. The T-15 is a Borg-Warner transmission, made by B-W.
I'd say keep the T-15. It's a very sturdy transmission. You could adapt a T-176, but the bellhousing and transmission lengths are different, and it won't bolt up to a D20 (they came in CJs with the D300 - and the pattern is totally different). One solution would be to sell this truck and buy a 1980 or newer J-10 with a 258 and manual transmission. Those trucks came with the T-176, paired with the NP208 transfer case.
JMO - flat beds are vastly less useful than a pickup bed for most people. Plus you're much less likely to be able to sell the truck later if it has a custom bed. And building a custom bed is not an insignificant effort ...
Both the factory parts manual and factory service manual are available from BJs. Not cheap, but these reprints are your best source of info. Nothing specifically for the '77 is online, AFAIK.

Welcome to the land of empty pockets and unfinished projects...
First off, let me congratulate and thank you for doing research before asking questions. You are going to fit right in here.
I dont think you will find a printed catalog like you can get for the CJs. Most of our vendors are not busy enough to warrant paper copies.
I have just rebuilt 2- 258s at work and, not to scare you, but both cams were worn down enough to cause chatter. Not sure on the mileage, but both were over 100K. We also put the Howel TBI setup on them and it does work well. IMHO they are lacking in that they dont control timing, but thats for a different thread...

Flatbed!? So you buy this rare vehicle, with a body that has alot of character, and cut it to bits? You can do as you will with what you own, that’s none of my concern, but in my personal option a J Truck is not the vehicle to flatbed.

My mistake, it is a T15. Something was not sitting right when I was typing my first post. Maybe I will just keep it in there.
As far as a flatbed, he is right about it being hard to find one in this area that does not have the body cancer, lots of salt on the roads in the winter. Who knows, I might have to make a trip to OK or TX when I get the funds, because I really want to keep it basically original.
As far as the catalog, I guess I am otta luck. BJ's used to have a print catalog, but I guess no more.
I will try to get some more pics up later today or tomarro. Thank you all for the help.
