chroming prices

I just took my rhino grill in to get it rechromed and he wants $500 to do it. Is this was way too much? The grill is straight and only has some rust showing up aong the bottom edge. Anyone know of a cheaper place to send it? If it is $500 to redo it I think I'll put the muscle grill back on.

I haven't had anything chromed or most usually de-chromed in many years but $500 seems crazy high for that little grille. If you can wait it's a LOT cheaper if you can wait till the shop runs a batch and includes yours. If he does it as an individual piece yeah it's gonna be spendy. Patience is money saved when getting stuff chromed.

chrome

lately the chroming places are all dying off. Those that are left are definitely getting pricey. $500 for the grill to strip , plate and rechrome then polish, seems to me, to be in the ballpark of what I have been quoted in the past few months. (Not saying that I think it's cheap)

I was quoted $150 2 years ago from an outfit 1 mile away from me.

I'd keep shopping around...

250 was what I was quoted and I thought that was too high. But I'm in the midwest I know things are more expensive there.

Yeah it is going to be way too much. Send it to me and I will give it a good home stripped and painted black.

That sounds high to me and shopping around would be best. Also like said earlier ask them how much to wait and have it done with another batch.

most of the time its just cheaper to buy a new crome part than have it recromed. the only time you should get something recrome is if it was made of unobtainium, like if you found a perfectly straight rhino grill and are looking to have an absoulutly perfect restoration. 500 seems about right for something that size. a few years back we sent some lifting eyes that were shaped like horses for our 1961 century sabre to a man in texas to be recromed as there arent many places around that still crome stuff. seems like there isnt a big market for it.

Don't think it's the market as much as "EPA Regulations".

Ditto! Up here I worked in a machine shop that did chrome plating and $500, if not standard, is cheap. Seriously, the company that disposed of our waste was outright robbing us and we had no choice thanks to the EPA. I'm sure that waste disposal company wasn't rolling in the dough either for the same reasons.

Not going political with this, I've no doubt it's a necessary evil. I can say, I know for a FACT that the dip tank was full of arsenic. Pretty bad stuff from what I hear...

I always wanted to get into it, my father ran his own nickel plating shop in Mass in the late 70s/early 80s. But like mentioned, the EPA is involved now..and if you have ever been IN a chrome/plating shop, it's needed. You don't want that stuff going down the drain. Sad though that shifty people have made it so expensive.

We DO have a member here who would likely powder coat chrome it for you. Greg Taylor, he has some threads going on the topic, and his work is very nice. And he has an oven that can handle a rhino.

You can buy a NOS one for that and it will last longer than the re-chrome. For that much (which I think is too high) I'll be buying the chrome spray paint for it.

Sticker shock

It's been 30 years since I had anything chromed so realisticly $500 isn't that bad I had 2 bumpers and thr grille on a 65 dodge van done for $250 then. As I recall at that time chroming was priced by the pound at industrial platers. I used a bumper repair service sice the bumpers needed work anyways. There may still be a bumper shop out there somewhere.

Send Dave, 2tonebluej10 a pm and ask him. He had a bumper re-chromed recently.
