What size exhaust?
The stock 2" single is too restrictive. Tailpipe size is an issue because I don't want to be bottoming out on a large pipe offroad.

I think I would go 3" all the way out, or 2.5" if your going true duel.

Why fight? Go 2.5" dual exhaust.

Dual 2 inch. Greater cross sectional area than a single 2.5, but less than a single 3 inch. 2 inch is easier to route. Dual 2.5 is just too much unless you have a hopped up 401.

If you have to keep it single and you're stone stock 3" is the max. You won't feel much of a difference between single 2.5 and 3.
I'm a big fan of going with dual 2.5 and anticipating future mods too.

Unless you are going to run headers you may not notice a difference at all and likely wouldn't be worth it.
If I were going to do it I'd run headers with 2.25 or 2.5 duals.

2.5 duals are fine on a 360, I'm running them and it's fine, I would either go 2.25" or 2.5" duals, or a single 3". The single is gonna be easier to route than duals.

Kind of a dumb question, when you say true duals does that include a crossover pipe?

It should, or you'll be giving up some torque across the rev range, and probably end up with about the same or less power than with the stock setup. With a 90-degree V8 with a 18436572 firing order, the only other way to acheive even exhaust pulses is with 180-degree headers that route two primaries from each bank into each collector, and there's just no room for that. Dual exhaust on a rig with Jeep-ish operating parameters and available space are merely cosmetic.

Then their are those of us who have to live with emissions standards. I have to have a single exhaust, but I can have dual ends. And I only have to buy one muffler and one cat.

I run a dual 2.25" in/single 3" out muffler with headers. Sounds good. Runs good.

If offroading involves the need for WOT at high rpms then I can see an oversize exhaust applied. Otherwise it's mere ear candy.

Really. You read my mind. Last I knew headers don't do a thing until 3500-4000 RPM...except make more noise.

Well, then there are those of us who want it all. I have a gigantic muffler (some Mitsubishi junkyard thing) on my Wagoneer that's Lexus quiet, and the 3" system sort of makes up for the backpressure imposed by all that silence. I like not scaring the elk when I drive up because it helps me eat better, but don't much like giving up power if I don't have to.
A 3" single pipe, by the way, has about the same cross-section area as 2-1/4" duals, and it's easier to do a single pipe system on these rigs without making goofy compromises. The tailpipe on mine has gone a little bit oval on rocks, so clearance is probably now about the same as stock.

I have no idea. I assume that it was from some sort of commercial diesel, since I can't think of any Mitsubishi road car or truck that would have a 3" muffler. It surely is quiet -- have to glance at the tach now and then to be sure the thing is running. And 20 bucks seemed pretty good for such a big hunk of stainless. It does hang down a bit -- almost as long and deeper than a stock Wagoneer gas tank.

3" single or ANY size duals.
I run true duals, they sound good. Engine runs good. I'll be switching from 2.5 sidepipes to 2" duals straight out the back.

i want to redo the exhaust so my pipes arnt rock targets anymore and ill prolly run 2.5 y pipe off headers into a single 3in all the way back under the bed. with a flowmaster 40 or 50. hoping to keep a simulator sound as i love way it sounds now just not all the leaks
