Almost scrapped 401 surprise!

Ok, so, as many of you know, I scrapped an 88 Wag a couple of months ago. It was ostensibly a normal 88, normal 2 Bbl, Mitsu Starter, shifter flag read like a 229.

When I pulled the body off to reveal the frame, I discovered an NP208... with proper length driveshafts... SuhWEET! I will use that in my Off Road Waggie, maybe for a Memorial Day off-road adventure... WOOHOO!

So this frame has been sitting on my trailer since then and I needed to clear it. I already sold the tranny and considered just scrapping the frame with the 360 on it.... other than an engine remanufacturer no-one has been making it worthwhile to keep more 360's around.

BUUUUT, the Wag was running when it hit that deer and I just couldn't resist it. Imagine my surprise when I put the engine on the ground and when it dumped it over, lo and behold it's a 401... WHAT!? Well this is the frame that just keeps on giving! I need to get a closer look at the flexplate to see if it was actually balanced for the 401 since we all know that the 401's never came with the smaller flexplate and Mitsu Starter. Other wise, the PO never got it properly balanced and just transfered everything over from the 360 as it was.

Either way, I need to get this on the stand and fire it up! Almost makes me reticent to scrap the frame... almost! Just don't have the room!

Have a great weekend, everyone,

What a great find.

I had the shop rebalance the Mitsubishi-style flexplate for my 401. It was included in the crank balancing and it let me keep my wiring stock.

Now that is a good find! Good thing you looked it over before you dumped it.

Pretty cool! Dear Neighbor and I diverted a rustbucket '78 Wagoneer from its trip to the crusher to scrounge a few small parts. When I was putting my 360 back together I went out and raised the hood of the '78 to get oriented on the arrangement of the front brackets. Just as I was closing the hood I noticed a 4-barrel peeking out from under the air cleaner and miscellaneous loose junk. Pushed the tumbleweeds aside, crawled under and flicked my Bic. Sho'-nuf -- 401! I gathered up some plug wires, slapped a few things back together, applied jumper cables & starting fluid, and it fired right up and sounded good. Next time I get some time, I'll put some gas in it and try to get it running long enough for a better evaluation. Then if compression & oil pressure check out good I'll pull the engine and ready it to replace the peaky hotrod 360 in my Wagoneer.

Always check the casting numbers on those junkers, especially if they hail from west of the Mississippi!

Thanks for sharing the joy! THis really motivates me to get that engine stand going as I now have 4 401's to fire up! May pick up a 76 Wag with one also, even though space is TYT!
