Welcome from La Habra (north O.C.)
Do you live in L.A. or a suburb?

I am very close to LAX. I am actually in the process of purchasing a 77 Chief Sport. Any advice on what to look for? So far I know the gas gauge does not work.

A small list

Make sure the tags are current! The seller may be having trouble getting it to pass the emissions test. The gas gauge problem is common. Most of the time the ground wire on the sending unit is corroded or the sending unit is bad. If you can post some pics in the FSJ general discussion section others with the same year/model may chime in with specifics to look out for. If you can post a link to a photo web host, you can have many pics so others can get a good idea of the engine/trans/transfer case, interior/exterior,axles,signs of chronic oil/lube leaks etc. This is a good way to have others help you catch modifications that may be a problem. Claims of the seller such as "original condition" can be verified from detailed photos of the things listed. Finally, if it runs have a friend follow you on a test drive and observe things like blue ,black or white smoke from tail pipe, signal function, tracking, ie does the front axle look lined up with the rear (frame bent)? How does the 4x4 seem to function,ie. (strange clunking sounds when engaged, have your friend verify that the front drive shaft turns)?

Good news! I just purchased the 1977 Chief. It is in excellent condition. I followed the advice given and looked for all the things mentioned. I test drove it for about 30 minutes...the seller was very easy going. I drove it home roughly 75 miles, then drove it around the house about another 10 miles or so. Amazingly, most things seem to work, except the gas gauge...which makes me very cautious of driving it. I would hate to run out of gas. The engine runs very good, but it does have some oil leaks. It has the Chief S badges on it, but I am just not familiar with these yet to know how significant that is or if they are original badges. It seems to be tricky to get the gas pump situated in the gas filler nozzle correctly. Is this common? I plan on performing most of the work, once I become more familiar with this vehicle. In the meantime, is there a shop you guys would suggest?

I will post pics soon as I can.
