The "Goofy" build thread
I bought Goofy from Goofy here on the board in late February 2011. I was looking for a nice waggy body for my highly modified J10 (specs in my sig).
After towing Goofy home and putting a radiator in, he started right up and drove fine. I really like Goofy and decided that you can never have too many FSJ's. Plus, my girlfriend needs something to 'wheel.
Build plans are as follows:
Ford High Pinion D44 8 lug front locked with 4:10's direct bolt-in SOA
Dodge Full Float 8 lug rear open with 4:10's direct bolt-in SOA
Custom made bumpers front and rear
full high steer with hydro assist.
Atlas 2 speed 3.8 low
Stock (rebuilt) AMC 360
Stock TF 727
1350 CV drive shafts front and rear
35's or 37's MTR Kevlars on H2 rims
Full exo cage
So in other words, a light duty 'wheeler that is capable of pulling out the big J10.
We've dubed it the "J10 recovery vehicle"
Here it is as I bought it. The hood was previously primered black, so we took the primer off with some rags and water.
Looks better now
I power washed the wood grain off with a 4000 psi pressure washer
1978 Ford 3/4ton Hp Dana 44 purchased from the yard with 4:10's for $200 plus the front drive shaft
1983 Dodge W300 Dana 60 rear purchased from the junk yard for $130 with 4:10's
Rear axle all cleaned up
I made some spring hangers for the rear shackle flip out of 1/4" thick angle iron and some 1/4" thick flat bar

I've already bolted in the front axle (it is indeed a direct bolt-in for SOA). No pics of that just yet.
Already ordered the Atlas 2speed 3.8
Already have the passenger side flat top knuckle milled and drilled.
Picking up some H2 wheel tonight.

Got a lot done on Goofy this weekend.
Installed the rear Dana 60
The custom shackles lifted the rear 11"
the front has bent leaf springs, so I have it on jackstands
Planning to use stock LX450 front coils, which are Old Man Emu's

Almost exact same setup on my 88. 'cept I did discs on the rear. And LR's in both. H2's look awsome on FSJ's! 'bout to pick up a set of 37" Boggers to put on my H2's, the BFG's almost have no tread pattern left, lol.

Coming along nicely. I too like the look of H2 wheels on an FSJ.

Pretty Stiff
I'm on the mud site and have read the stats before. I figure they will be great coils on the front of a waggy, but that is just my guess. I know they work GREAT on the LX450, which tips the scales at 6160lbs. I'm not sure anyone's ever put them on a waggy before...
Although after talking with the guys at spidertrax (they are here in town), I'm leaning against coils on goofy. Leaves will be great. The thought is crossing my mind to take the 2" leaves out of my J10 and putting them on goofy. But then I have to do coilovers on the J10...
Pics in a few minutes...

The H2's were machined by the previous owner, so I only had to bolt them on

Well I've had all kinds of problems ordering parts, but some have arrived and are installed.
My girlfriend ground down the front dana 44.
She removed some of the webbing on the diff so the u-bolts fit a little better and removed the factory shock tab.
New Chinese aluminum radiator arrived today! Bolted right in the factory bolt holes. No leaks!
Got it installed.
Got the driver side calipers and pads installed. Napa gave me two driver sides, so I must order a passenger side
The stock 13" brake line comes up short. Currently searching for new lines that mate to a waggy/ford d44 and are at least 20" long.

Coming along nice!
And, as I recall, a ford line should work fine (for say a lifted 78-79 F250). I believe the frame side of the line is a standard fitting.

Awesome build so far, keep it up!
If you're not gonna use that woodgrain trim I know someone who may want it.....

Ford E250 van brake lines from 86-2000 are 32" long and will bolt up without any modification of your stock line since they kept american fittings. FYI

Napa's website shows those brake hoses are like 14" long.
Do you have a part number?

Sorry I screwed up lol, the lines I used were from a 95 dodge 250 diesel 2wd, no part number as I got them used.
