Thumbs up putting 1 back on the road w/new QT & T400, master cyl, rear Lockright & brakes

This Waggy has been a farm truck for 2 years and not registered because the tranny is outawhack. Time to get it ready for some Moab duty. That starts with getting it to a garage that will make the work much easier.

He's getting spoiled! It's really going to an enclosed building with actual cement floors!

Yeah Man! Krista's dad has enclosed shop, concrete floor, creeper, lights, heat, the whole enchilada.

This is why I have been scrounging for QT parts for the last 10 years. Pulled this stuff off the shelf for assembly tonight. The differential was almost sold at one point (sorry Greg). It is pristine inside from a 75 Waggy we stripped and saved the 401 a few years back. The case is from Kevin down in PHX area. Chain is Morse of course.

Good for you folks, that's a good looking Wag. Worth fixing up.

Is that not the Waggy that was rolled? Sure looks the same.

Jeepstress & I each have 2 Waggys that look very similar, hers are 76 & 77 and mine are both 88 GWs. Her father gave her the 76 and my father gave me his 88. It was weird as both came here within a few months of each other. My dad's GW is also waiting for some TLC.

The two white ones together up at work, 77 up close:

Saturday, I tore down the old QT. Both brake cones have the output shaft spline destroyed in them. Fortunately the cone & thrust washers are still in great shape as well has the differential housing itself. This QT has been running more like an open differential for a while because of this. The Edrive shifter diaphram was full of QT fluid <sigh>. No wonder it would not shift. All the rest of the shifter parts were in good shape. This thing still pulled through deep snow like it was not there the last few winters.

some details...

low range unit in good shape, 10 splines are very nice

split the case

first sign of bad splines

good cone & thrust washers

trashed spline debris wreaks havoc on surface between brake cone and spider gears

the other side looks the same

this sometimes welds metal particals to the spider gear - there are 2 places on this one...

all good cone & thrust washers

brake cone surfaces look very clean considering the metal debris that was inside

trash

in this picture, there are two things missing besides the obvious tranny absence...

the rebuilt QT

rebuilt QT with NOS T400 case and new rebuild inside

There was still flashing to clean up on the T400 case. That didn't take long to clean up. I don't get to work with such clean parts very often. That and a heated garage is gonna spoil me.

LOL, there was no blood shed so far on this project. With that, some may think something went wrong.
