How to remove fuel sending unit on a 91, quick answer!

Ok so I removed the access plate no problem, removed both the fuel and return line and popped off both electrical wires.

But how do I remove that big ring holding it in? I put a pair of channel locks on it, but it would not turn. I did not force it because I dont want to break it.

help! THANKS!

The plastic Locking nut that holds the sending unit down unscrews to your left. However it may be a little stuck even cross threaded? but thats how it comes out, Mine was pretty stuck to but I was able to muscle it off, You could try tapping a rubber hammer on a Flat head or chisel at an angle to the left to break it free, only do it to free it, you don't want to carve up the lock nut for appearances sake.

I just did mine on my 1990 about 2 weeks ago.
I shot the nut with some BP Blaster (I like it better than WD40 to bust things loose-but just a personal preference). and let it soak in a few minutes and it came right off with the channel locks.

Now a funny story...mind you my Dad loves to come over an watch me do projects on the car, around the house, and so on. When I went to pull the old sending unit out I saw the filter sock was going to catch on the opening when I pulled it out so I went back in the garage to grab something to help. I had my "helper" just pull on the unit straight out and he was SO proud that he helped out. While I look at his hand I saw the unit minus the filter sock! I didn't have the heart to tell him the sock was now sitting at the bottom so the gas tank. But it was easy enough to fish it out so no major harm.

Good luck with the fuel sending unit! I had to replace mine right after I bought it as the fiance said she wouldn't trust just keeping track of the mileage when we filled up. She loves the jeep too so figured I would keep her happy with my other baby.

Ok I still cant get it off. I cant really grip it with my big channel locks, and the next size down is to small. I opened up my FSM and it says to hit the ring with a brass drift

What tool exactly did you use?

I tried tapping the corners with a screw driver and hammer, but it did not budge. I was tapping it pretty hard too. 3

Use Big channel locks

Replaced this on my 87 Grand Wagoneer

After cleaning up with the shop Vac, I used the largest pair of channel locks I own ... kind of a PITA but I got it to work. Tried tapping with a brass punch (as suggested in the Haynes manual) and this definitely is not the way to go as you will tear up the plastic locknut.

Others have suggested crossed screwdrivers but I have not tried this personally

Best Regards

You need big huge arse channel lock pliers. If a 6 year old kid can pick them up, they're too small.

I've never had luck using big channel locks. The problem I've found is if the jaws are big enough to open around the nut they're too big too fit in the access hole.

This is THE absolute best tool thread ever. Picture links are busted but the description gives you the idea...

I had to create my own tool several months ago by notching a big plastic pipe basically creating my own socket. It was black pipe, did not fit 'perfect', I had to trial and error the notches a few times, and i do not recall the pipe diameter.

That things was STUCK on there.

This is the worst part: I was plannign to replace the sock because I was getting 'random' stalling and everyone says the sock is probably bad and to check there first. After getting in there, the sock was not in bad shape. Oh well - replaced it.

The random stalling problem is not fixed and will re-appear shortly in another thread.

Did this last fall... I took a piece of 3/4" plywood and cut notches to fit into the cap recesses. I broke the plywood putting it back on but it worked well for the time I needed it.
