Unhappy New to this

Hi Guy's,
I am new here.
I have a 1985 wagoneer that is not pretty, but I like it.
I know this question has probably been asked so many times that you are sick of it.
But I can't find the answer so, here we go!.
My amc 5.9 is sick. Money is tight!
I happened to have and early 80's dodge 360 sitting in my shop from another project. It has everything with it such as exaust manifolds to alt. I know that it will not bolt up to my tranny.
I would would rather not change the tranny.
My Question is, Does anyone make an adapter for a dodge 360 to mate to the auto tranny that is in my wagon?
Thank You

hi and welcome to the board.

I am pretty darn sure there are no adapters to mate a dodge 360 to an AMC bellhousing but someone else will pipe in.

Even if it would you would end up messing with exhaust routing, linkage issues, radiator hoses may not work, custom engine mounts and goodness knows what else.

How sick is the AMC???

Welcome!

I don't believe anyone make that adapter. The 727 AMC & Chrysler A/T is the same trans with just a different bellhousing- you'd be money ahead even if you just found a junk Chrysler 727 and swapped you current 727 "guts" and tailshaft to it.

Unhappy

Well, about 3 months ago it developed a faint ticking on the right side of the engine. I talked to a mechanic friend of mine and he thought it might have been a noisy lifter. The noise would come and go so I just figured that I would keep an ear out to see if it got any worse. It did.
Money is kind of tight so I thought I would just replace the lifters, rockers and push rods on that side and see if I could get another year out of it. It wasn't a lifter so I am thinking that it has to be a rist pin. At that point everything came to a stop. After checking into all of the scenarios of rebuilding it. I'm just not in that space right now to shell out that kind of money, but damit I miss driving it! and Ive got this other motor just sitting there. I kind of wish it was a gm 350. There seems to be alot of help for swapping them.
Any input would be great.
I can't remember, Is the bell housing on a 727 a two piece?
Can I swap the bell housing off a dodge tranny or is it all one piece?
I can't remember.

the bellhousing isn't seperate but you could swap over all the internals if needed.

I would post a WTB in the classifieds here in the forum. We have a TON of guys from Oregon here in the group that I'm sure have a 360 or two layin around.
Give me about a year and a half and I'll have a spare for ya (starting a rebuild project on a core I'm picking up soon).

Welcome to the land of empty pockets and unfinished projects....

I agree with you being money ahead to run another AMC engine. The swap will nickel and dime you to death...

Not pretty you say?? You are in the wrong forum for that. You will have to repost in the ugly section.
J/K. Just a tick? On an 85 I would place my bet on the AIR tube leaking exhaust unless there are other signs.

710-burner;
I really wish that was it.
But no, its a metalic clapping that went from an almost unheard tick to an embarrassing loud clap that changes as you rev up or rev down. I would think that if its a rod that it would be a deeper knock. Thats why I am thinking its a rist pin. However I am humble in my mechanical ability. So I think to myself as I'm looking at it, well if i'm going to spend the money to do this right then I should pull the tranny also and rebuild it too. Well if I'm going to do that then I should pull the t-case and do that too. well then I should redo the cooling system. Well heck, Ive got it in the shop I might as well put the 2" spring lift in that I want. Well heck, I can't have a shiny new drivetrain in a shabby paint job. Do you see how this can spiral out of financial control? priorities can bum you out some times.I have a strong running dodge 360 sitting in the corner in my way. I'm hoping someone on here needs it in trade. Thank you guy's for all the welcomes!
Mike

Mike,
Where in Oregon are you? If you're up north near Portland, I might be interested in taking that AMC 360 off your hands once you replace it with that dodge.
You sure its not a lifter sticking? Bad valve? I just dont see how the noise from a bad wrist pin would come and go and come back louder.
Heck, if this isnt your daily driver, I'd say park it and pull the motor and do a home rebuild. The rebuild kits cost less than it would to change everything over to that Dodge. Don't get scared either, these AMC motors are pretty simple and not hard to work on.

I am betting that you have had a rocker bridge wear out.

For the price of valve cover gaskets you can find out. And if you can convince yourself that a swap is a good idea, then you should be mechanically able to get the valve covers off and have a look around. I'd hate to see you get all wrapped up in a swap, or leave the truck sitting, for a 20 dollar pair of rockers.

Sell the chryco motor and fix what ya got. Before you start throwing parts at it make sure it's not an exhaust leak. Put a length of hose to your ear and run the other end over all your exh connections, smog components, AIS tubes/connections.

Hey Mike,

I have the 360 that I just pulled from my 87 Grand in December(I am doing a 5.3 swap.) It has 170k on the clock, but was a good runner that I had recently done the RMS in. It also passed DEQ last year.(with a little angst!) I think it would get you through for some time and maybe even be a better place to start if you're considering a rebuild.

I just emailed you, let me know if you are interested.

Aaron
