my new Tad Rack

So, thanks to Babywag, I am new new proud owner of a Tad Rack. I put a little work into it to clean it up and I got it installed tonight. I am very happy with the way it looks and works. Plus, it was probibly one of the easiest installs that I have ever done. On to the pics:

***EDIT*** Pictures resized to 640X480

Rack when I picked it up from Babywag

Some of the parts back from media blasting

Some of the parts after primer. ( used rustolium spray primer)

Rack after I painted and installed it. (paint was rustolium textured matte black)

All I need to do now is to install the base racks and all will be good.

<Resize your pix and your can repost them>

It had been sitting for quite a while. I don't think Babywag really wanted to let it go. I know I wouldn't if I were him, but I promised to give it a new home and take care of it.

They aren't made anymore. Tad used to have his students make them as a class project, but that program stopped quite a few years ago. Now the only way to get one is to find someone that is selling theirs. I lucked into mine and I am glad I did.

Goodness that's making me feel old! Waynestiles has my rack up in Michigan, I hope it isn't rusting like that one did. It's been awhile since Tad's students did this. It would be nice to do again, as they are definately very well made.

That came out really nice Paul!
Just a heads up. That's a very early rack, you need to seal the lower areas of the corners, front/rear and side pieces. We didn't do that in the first couple of years. Some black paintable caulk will do the trick.

Not at all
There were a lot of folks involved with the development of the racks.
Most notably myself, billrb, irbob, Ridgebak and mtngoat - but overall it was the work of what members here wanted back in 2002.
Some folks will actually remember walking around in the snow/dark and taking measurements for us.

I'm way behind on the current project to open source the .dxf and .pcm files along with the cut lists and short tutorial on the corner rolling and bend angles.
It's not complex, I've just been getting my butt kicked with paperwork lately.

Good to see another TadRack mounted up. I got one a few years ago that had been sitting in original shipping box for a few years. I bet there are more out there not being used.

My buddy and I used some permatex #2. We put a ring of permatex between the legs of the rack and the roof of the Jeep. Then we put another ring of permatex between the top of the rack feet and the washers for the mounting bolts. I am gonna water test it in a few days before I put the roofline back in. I am hoping that it will seal up nice and water tight.

I should of phrased that better.
Look at the inside of the corners where the sheetmetal is tacked to the square tube, that's the areas that we did not seal originally. Water will seep down inbetween those pieces.
I'll do it in a pic for you when I get home tonight, can't get to any picture hosting sites from work.
There was a post on here someplace about how/where to do this back, not sure if I can find it.

i think autobody seam sealer might work well in those spots around the corners

All those areas.
Seam sealer would be great if you have some too.
