metric or SAE?
Oh boy, I hate to ask this question, but I need an answer. Going to pick up my rig ('87 GW) tomorrow and need to take my tools with me. Do I pack metric or SAE stuff? I know, I know, leave the canolii...

On an 80's rig I would pack common tools of both. Depends on the components country of origin.

X2. Grab both. IIRC, the brake booster bolts and the flare fitting on the PS steering pump are metric.
Most everything else is from 3/8" up to 9/16".
The cheapo tool "kits" in the blow molded cases often have everything you need for quick field repairs.
What is wrong with it or what do you suspect may need repairs?

Thanks. I suspect it needs a TV adjustment in the worse way...acceleration is way sluggish and shift points are off. Brakes are hard, leading me to believe collapsed hoses, need for pads, or booster check valve. Other than that I don't expect I'll have problems but it is a 4 hour drive back home through the Sierras (hilly!) and I don't want to take chances. I've already mapped out all the parts places within a 5 mile radius of where I'm picking it up...ha ha,paranoid? Maybe. Prepared? You bet. I just checked to make sure my AAA card is in my wallet
What do I need to changeout pads? My shop manual has not arrived yet.

Might want to pick up new calipers, then. They're cheap, IIRC. Bring your standard flare wrench kit with you to change them out. Booster check valve is cheap. I actually have a new spare one in my parts drawer!
And don't forget the fluids, too!

Brake pad bolts are either 3/8" hex (allen) or 10mm hex (allen). I've seen both depending on the source. I have one of each socket in my tool box.
