Is there a good smog/emissions removal guide somewhere?

I've searched the forums numerous times trying to piece together how to do this myself, but most threads are about the pros and cons. Well, I'm tired of constantly having to deal with vacuum leaks and I don't need to pass emissions in my state, so I want it gone.

I have an 83 wag limited 360 with np229(vacuum controlled), I want to have all nice things like power steering, brakes and heat, but I want gone the smog pump, ctos, and blah blah canisters. Can someone point me in the right direction? If not, I think I may venture forward with what I've got and do a write up myself.

In my opinion - - which wont count for much...

You can remove off alot of stuff - especially if you convert to fuel injection - which i did.

I think that one should keep the EGR system and Cat converter...yea it may cost a tiny bit of horsepower and possibly a tiny bit of fuel economy ....but we all have to breathe - and so will your kids

FOR SURE keep the entire PCV and fresh air to air cleaner to oil fill tube system intact...it sucks out blowby and water vapor to be reburned and significantly reduces the build up of gunk inside the engine - and possibly reducing blown seals ( not the joke about the penguin and the blown seal )

Charcol canister system should also be intact IMHO as it reduces the unburned gas vapor leaching out of your rig and into the atmosphere- and it uses zero horsepower

But im only a shade tree mechanic and many folks will disagree im sure

I useually get a replacement carb without emissions if I cant get the stock carb to run right by plugging everything and removing it. that generation of emissions technology doesnt work properly long anyway, the charcol gets saturated and stops working, vaccuum leaks develop as youve noted, hoses rot, c converters get posined and rot out eventually, so you would have alot of work to do to keep the emissions working properly. I would hate to think what a new c converter costs with the price of precious metals now a days.

on second thought, keep the emissions and burn more gas, we need addition carbon in the atmosphere, our temps are way below normal here!

Get a new ch/ canister( posted in another thread) as the old one is probably not working correctly anyways and is needed for gas tank vapors recovery.
Keep the air cleaner to oil fill tube intact as mentioned below. Get rid of the pump etc... but do your self a favor and buy a new cat converter. They are really efficient and way better with little back pressure. They are expensive so keep that last on your list. I have seen older cars pass emissions test with that alone as they are way better than the ones that were first put on the jeeps. It may not ever pass the under hood visual though.

All of mine was recently removed, Its a lot easier to work on and no need to worry about vacuum leaks after replacing the few I kept. I just removed my canister completely and vented the tank through the cap, the lines on the exhaust manifold were crimped for the time being untill I install headers and I removed the cat. Id just rip all the vacuum lines off and start from scratch with the items you want to keep.
