hey guys, in my 83 cherokee i have a problem with the vacumm system that switches the case from 2hi to 4 hi, i suspect a vacuum leak. Has anyone else had this problem? if so was the leak in a similar place each time? if not i guess i will have lots of fun trying to chase down the leak. also, does anyone know if a 229 or 228 was used in 83? i would go look, but my jeep is at home while i'm stuck here at school until next friday.

It would be the 229 in the select trac setup. Vacuum problems are common if the system has not been gone over. First thing to check is if the vacuum motor on the xfer case is bound. Try switching into 4wh while someone trys to move the vacuum motor by hand. Make sure to set the emergency brake and block the wheels. Alot of times the linkage/vacuum motor is frozen from lack of use.
