Rare Super Chief?

I am trying to sell a bus on craigslist and in the add I put maybe open to partial trades etc.
Well anyway, I got a nibble on the bus and the guy says he has a 1982 Cherokee Super Chief.
OK, now I think I got a pretty good handle on most of what AMC/Jeep offered over the years, but I have not really paid a whole lot of attention to the 1980 and up stuff. And I know AMC may have done some obscure strang things in the day but, did they really make a Super Chief model?
Or is it more than likely a previous owner/dealer sticker package to try to gold plate a turd.
I have seen early eighties 4-door Cherokee Chiefs (not a wide track either)but I am not sure those were factory built either.

Here is his response/description: enjoy,

It's a little rusty but nothing that isn't worth fixing up. I just rebuilt the motor (360 AMC) 6000 miles. It has a edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb. 1979 ported heads. brand new true dual exhaust. functional hood scoop. all 4 air shocks. It looks like a 2 door wagoneer on steroids. it's has wider axles than a wagoneer though. which is the main reason that makes it a super chief. they were pretty rare. chrysler 727 original tranny. shift in the fly 4x4. I try to send pics after work today

Either way I gotta see this thing, if we can come to an agreement on trading values it may be good for parts for the rest of the herd.

Its because its a Cherokee Chief "S" model. Which they all are that I have seen.

Since the Chief emblem has a red "S" on it, people assume its means Super..

Works for me cause in my opinion they are SUPER....

IIRC there was a Super Chief, but it was a 4-Door Wagoneer with W/T axles and flairs.

I think that's what they where called. Dealer mods from what I remember. A member here has one.

X2

The real "super chief" was a package from a dealer : it was a wagoneer converted to W/T axles and flares, so like a Cherokee Chief with 4 doors. Maybe the super chief package included also a 401 ? I have an article reprint somewhere..

This is a real Super Chief from 1977.

As mentioned, it was a dealer upgrade. There is a member in Denver area that has an 86 GW that was converted. I don't think they were referred to as Super Chiefs except by the dealer (forget name) that made the ones like above.

This is Scott's build thread on his WT GW:

I used to think this as well but it is not true. The "Chief" is a trim package not a body style. Trim packages for the Cherokee included the S, Chief, and Golden Eagle. You had a choice of only one.

the S don't mean Squat

All Chief head badges have the S. AMC put it there so people like us would ponder endless hours about it's true meaning.

It's an 89 Ford B700, 66 passenger Carpenter body.
Brasilian Ford built I6 Turbo Diesel w/Allison automatic tranny.

I bought it to move and store some of my extra parts when I moved from Michigan to Minnesota. Worked great as self propelled mobil storage.

Didn't the "S" stand for Sport? Since the Chief trim included the S trim pak the S was incorporated into the Chief badge.
I think the dealer you guys are talking about was prolly Brian Chuchua Jeep in SoCal.

Perhaps I misunderstood the Jeep sales Brochure?

Hey Joe, do you happen to have any info on Brian Chuchua or know where I can find it? I believe I have one of his conversions and I have been trying to find out more information for awhile now. Can't seem to find much on the net.

Oh of course it's one of those RARE models!

Brian Chuchua out west and Hinkles in SC were two of the biggest and best Jeep dealers in the world. They installed lift kits, tire/wheel combos, headers, engine swaps etc...right at the dealer and sold the Jeeps that way brand new.

No I sure don't Scott. Since he closed or sold his dealership I haven't heard much about him. In his time he was very active in promoting Jeeps and offroad racing in So Cal. Even with all the dealer customs he was doing his main focus was on the CJ models. You might try asking around on some of the CJ forums. He was a lot better known with that crowd than with the FSJ bunch.
