Engine question

Got a question and hope its not a dumb one. Is the AMC 360 the same as the Ford 360? The guys I work with say their the same I say their different. Any way the tell me any ford 360 part will switch over to the amc Just needing to settle the argument.

Nope, two different beasties. The oil fill tube on the AMC 360 doesn't exist on the Ford... a dizzy cap sits there instead, if I remember right.

But since they know so much, put some money on it.

However... the 360 does carry over a lot of Ford's electronics under the hood.

How certain are these coworkers about this? See...if they are confident that the AMC 360 is the same as a Ford 360, put a little wager on it...a beer...a sawbuck - whatever you like....then have the engine specs ready.

If you want, you can ask them about the Rambler 327...see if they think it's a small block Chevy....get another beer.

Hell no, not even close. The Chrysler 360 isnt even the same. They are all different motors, just happen to have the same CID.

Also ask them about the AMC 304, 390 and 401, they'd probably think they're the same as the International, Ford and Buick engines.

My friends are correct and it seems the AMC engineers tried to take the best of all the engines and combine to a very leaky weak motor for us to power up.

If you are not paying real close attention and you look at one that has a Duraspark ignition, you might think its a Ford, but the Ford style starter will not work on any Ford because it has a different throw lenght to the drive. The Duraspark, York compressor, and maybe the carb are the only things that will change over.

There are no dumb questions

I had a very knowledgable mechanic insist that a Studebaker 289 was the same as a Ford 289. Aside from the completly different design of the two engines and the fact that Studebaker never outsourced engines for US made vehicles He was correct.

Um...have to disagree with you here - at least as far as my 327 and my son's 360 go. Both are very strong, solid engines. The 360's never been out of the Wag and doesn't leak now that the seals etc. have been replaced (130,000 miles). The 327 is leaking a bit - but it was just rebuilt and there's a freeze plug that is still leaking - which gets taken care of on Wed. It doesn't leak a drop of oil.

I feel the AMC engines (sixes and eights) were some of the best of their generation - but that's just me.
