Plastic gas tank 1981 J20 ?

I did a search on plastic gas tank repair & did not find a sure fire way to repair the cracked tank I have. Its got 1" crack up by the top side where the mounting strap meets the frame. ( caused by the DS government repair team hanging the tank by only two bolts)

Has anyone made a lasting repair with JB Weld? Or tried melting (welding) the plastic with a soldering iron set to 350 degrees or less ?

I'd rather just replace the tank at this point - but all the listings I see are for '79 & older - does anyone know the difference? It seems most photos I saw had the sending unit hole on top and the fill/vent out the side. My '81 has the fill/vent out the front side corner towards the fill plate and the sending unit out the front of the tank.

I think they will all work I have a 84 and the sending unit goes in the top front corner.
They should all fit but mabe the fill hose is different

The think the difference in the pre 1980 tanks and your tank is the width. The earlier tanks were a little wider and did not have driveshaft interference because the rear axle pinion is offset a little to the passenger side. The 1980 and later driveshafts are centered. You have already seen the other differences. I have been trying to find a replacement tank that would fit in the limited space that is provided for the stock tank with no luck. Thes later tanks show up in the for sale section occasionally. I don't think you will get a permanat repair with trying to melt the tank back together since the plastic is a cross link polymer

Thanks for the info. I knew there must be some reason the tanks are not listed '80 & up. I roughed up the area till it was real rough. I then MarineTex'd a big patch over the roughed up area. I hope it holds for a while - I'll be on the look out for a replacement tank though.

I don't know if you can fix them but only 79's and before can be purchased new. I believe that 80 and newer had the fuel sending device mounted on the front side of the tank and this has been outlawed by the Fed's. I found one in a junk yard for my dads truck as his tank cracked in the same place.

I had a crack in mine on the top that was leaking and I used JB weld about 2 years ago. Still holding so far. Just roughed it up real good with some sand paper then cleaned it up and went to town.

So, can one just install a 79 or earlier fuel tank into say a 1980 J10 with a 78 J20 D60 rear end (offset slightly to the pass side)? That is my setup and I would like to get a bigger tank (Aero tanks has them). Also what about the sending unit/hoses?

That should work, you'll need the filler neck from the older truck I would imagine but you should be able to extend/shorten the wiring and fuel lines to the sending unit pretty easy. The fuel lines to the tank are rubber anyway and should probably be replaced by now regardless.
