What is this clip thingy for?

My Jeep had no carpet when I got it and now I'm trying to install some and these seem to be in the way. What purpose are they supposed to serve?

Thanks!

The part that is bent out is supposed to be bent "up". It originally held the vertical part of the carpet.

No they are stock, juat bent as mentioned above. They hold the vertical carpet that covers the step up into the cargo area in place.

they must be stock. mine has em. Kind of hard to see them in this pic but they are there. Like previous poster said, they hold the strip of carpeting that runs along the front of the shelf.

Those clips hold the extra magazines for the factory provided M60 machine gun. A very rare option.

So my BJ's carpet set has 1 continuous piece that comes in from low, goes up the step and continues back under the rear seat. Sounds like in that setup I should remove the clips right?

Probably. I didn't know that the BJ's carpet was molded around that area. Please post pictures when installed!!!

My 78 had a plastic molded piece that covered the face of the step.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Justin said it was a continuously molded piece of carpet that went from the front to back, over that step, in one piece.

The OEM carpet was separated in that area from my experience.
