carb question

I have a 79 cherokee 360 w/2barrel carb. what is the the the junk on the rear of the carb for? what is its purpose , and can it be removed. my carb is in need of rebuild and the kit is around 60 $ where the kit for my 74 v-8 cj is only 22$ . the cj carb does not have this outfit on the rear of the carb.. sorry do not have a pic..any info on this would be appreciated.

Altitude compensator. As you increase in altitude, it allows in additional air to lean out the mixture.

Not sure if you can remove it or not...
