On Board Air

Wow, This thing works..
1: installed 85ish York compressor on my 71 401.
2: installed 8inx36in tank under my flatbed
3: installed connections, guage, hose, w/ compression fittings and 3/8in copper tubing.
4: tied a 5clam Dsquare pressure switch inline from Home Depot.
5: wired temp power to switch.
6: attatched both central lugs to A/C clutch wire.
7: poured about 4oz of comressor oil into comp.
8: fired it up and spent about 30mins adjusting cut/in and cut/out switches.

Dang, it fills said tank in about 1.5 mins. Faster than I thought it would.

I just need to run a switch to my console and voila..OBA

how often do you have to refill the oil? seems to me it would all go out the tubing to whatever tool you are powering and gum it up

I have heard about this but never seen one in action or even installed...wish someone could ome up with a kit to save the hasle of piecing together ones own - and possibly making a mistake

Tripwire...there are kits out there..Google Kilby (I think thats the correct spelling?) they make OBA kits and all kinds of stuff. But what you have witnessed here is typical Jeepster thriftyness. Us Jeepers are notoriously a chea...uh, thrifty...bunch of guys. And while there are certianly a boat load of folks out there that "own" Jeeps..most of us don't have the resorces to just drop a chunk of change on the shiney new stuff. We have learned to make due and adapt. That being said, and in no way meaning to be disrespectful to you or Kilby or anyone else...These "kits" are very expensive. IMHO anyway. Granted not eveyone has the skills to do it yourself (and some of us just shouldn't!) but the cost of scronging the parts and making it work is not only less expensive...but part of the fun.
Wow, that all came out sounding like a rant...Sorry! I just got a rare bit of inspiration and started typing! Heehee! That shouldn't happen again for another 20 or 30 years!

how often do you have to refill the oil?

I don't have a clue...yet. I have read that there is loss and that one can set up a dashpot type recovery. That will be the next adaptation when I get a chance.


FWIW, Trip, I kinda think I wrote out a blueprint for doing your own. If there are details I can provide , I will.

York compressors have a separate oil resevoir crankcase unlike most other compressors (like a Sanden) that require the freon for lubrication.

I have been running Yorks on two different Jeeps for years and I've only put oil in once I think. I use them all the time for air tools, tires etc.

The main thing is to use a York with right hand suction so that when it's laid down on it's side the way they are mounted in FSJs....the suction side is on top. There is an S cast into the head that identifies the suciton port.

If you use one with left hand suction it will blow oil out through the hose.

Kilby Enterprises sells kits with everything included but be prepared to crack the wallet open. This one is $1150 set up for an AMC V8:

It's real easy and cheap to set up with junk yard parts though.

I haven't had much of a problem with oil being fed out with mine either, it is mounted in stock form with the intake on the top. I do have a coalescing filter inline, though.

Looks awesome... I am looking ot get onboard air on one or both of my vehicles.
For those of us wanting to keep the AC what about wiring a cheapy 12v compressor in? I know it would take forever to fill but if you have a big tank that should not be an issue. Anyone done this?

X2, I have also heard of people running the compressors upright and side by side to retain their A/C but forgot where I found it...
