Opinions on Caddy 472?
I may have found a Caddy 472 + th400 (by accident of course ). How bad do you guys think it would be to stuff it into a '78 Chief? Someone here stuffed a Cad 500 in so I know it will fit, but how tight on the heater box and brake booster? I'd like to stay AMC, but "no replacement for displacement", and the price is right.
This is what happens when the weather is too crappy to be outside. Just when I thought I had things worked out, I get more BAAADDDDD ideas, ........ but it could be so much fun though.

Awesome engines. Just let me know where you plan on buying motor mounts, axle shafts, driveshafts and u-joints so I can call my stockbroker. If somebady can shoehorn a 460 into an FSJ then I'm sure a 472 will fit with not too much trouble. My guess is a body lift and hydroboost brakes will be a requirement for much needed room.

As I remember the length may be a bigger issue than width. Somone on here has the measurements for comparison.

Got a 14 bolt for the rear, was talking to a guy about a dana 60 when he says "but I do know where there is a 472 +th400"
Torch, welder, and some head scratchin should take care of motor mounts, and drive shafts, sorta.
U- joints.... hmmm wonder if anyone makes a set of 1410 double cardan joints, 1350s are the biggest I've seen.
Might need to box the rest of the frame though, hate to twist it.

From what I recall, the 472/500 is a popular swap into a Wagoneer. Do a Google search for "site: www.ifsja.org Cadillac 500" and you'll find lots of threads.

 $1000 for an engine kit!?!
Looking at a few forums and sites, all these guys seem to be adapting Big Block Crappy parts to work in these Caddy motors. Maybe should go with the BBC instead?

Its not a 472, but I just did a 425 into a '75 J-20.
http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=110126
Once I got it all together, I discovered that the front pump is out of the nailhead 400 I used. I have the Caddy 400 and adapter just about ready to go in. Then swap the rear axle to match the front...

Thanks for the pics Jaber , that was what I needed to see. I am going to let the caddy go . I just dont think my heater box would survive very long with getting the motor all torqued up. Dont really want to go to hydro boost either.
Besides, if I stick with an Amc, I have an extra tranny, heads, carb, and other misc. parts I can get upgraded while driving with (more or less) stock stuff. At least thats what I keep telling myself, sounded more convincing in my head though.
