Little Gems

I saw this on an MJ forum and thought it would be a good idea here....

Quote:
I'm not looking for a FAQ here, I'm looking for those warnings or little gems of knowledge that you want every owner to know, but they'll likely not ask about until it's too late.

So, whatcha got?

I've been told to check for rust above the gas tank skid area. What else?

Vacuum hoses...replace them

The charcoal canister (and vapor separator) are measured air bleeds for the carburetor

Charcoal canister...purge signal diaphragm gets rotten and leaks (causing fuel mixture issues)

The EGR requires back pressure to operate (it is a 2-stage EGR)

The stock gauges are not terribly accurate

ammeter bypass - AKA how to prevent spontaneous combustion

keep your drain ports clean if you want to keep your floorboards

proper grounding of wiring will save you serious headaches...always check your ground

modern motor oil will eat your camshaft lobes

and finally...

...an ounce of prevention is worth a 5 mile walk to town...

Now, that's cheating!!!

And, besides, I was looking for something a bit different from what people normally find in FAQ's.

OK, I'll bite...

It is a whole lot easier to fix vacuum problems with the help of a MityVac hand vacuum pump w/gauge than with just guessing, replacing all the vacuum hoses, getting them connected wrong and screw it up worse.

Wake up and put the right juice in your QuadraTrac.

Don't ignore those funny sounds coming from the rear axle at 65 mph.

back pressure is a myth when it comes to exhaust design, its all about flow vs. velocity

that and you can rebuild your own 4wd vacuum actuator with some RTV an o-ring and a cotter pin, total cost is around $9 max if you have to buy a tube of RTV, but lets face it... if you own a jeep you already have about 5-6 laying around randomly, lol

im not talking about the presence of pressure in the exhaust system, only it having an effect on power and or torque output, in truth, the less pressure in the exhaust, the better, no matter what

I do not know on a truck motor that turn 4000 rpm but on my 542ci mopar stroker I went from 3.5 inch exhaust on both sides running thru one chamber flowmasters with an x pipe to 3inch with and x pipe and 2 chamber flowmasters and picked up 12hp and 22 ft lbs of torque. It was scavenging so hard at 6000+ RPM it was pulling fuel out of the cylinder during valve over lap. So a little less velocity can help sometimes.

Suggestions for lil gems:

1. Bolt in (or requiring very little mods) parts from non-FSJ junk yard donors (like the S10 steering box)

2. Innovative fixes (like the vacuum actuator mentioned above)

3. Random bits of knowledge (likes currently being posted)

4. Anything else that anyone would think is useful to those of us just aquiring the addiction.

Alwasy tinker with something on your FSJ, they are very needy beasts and if you don't play with them they will MAKE you work on them. Greese 1 fitting a week if you have too, because 1st week you skip - bang t-case explodes.

2000 Ford F-250 rear shocks are a perfect fit for SOA grand waggy's at all 4 corners

also for the front brake lines mid 80's 3/4 ton chevy van work great!

When they say reuse the old distributor gear there not kidding it will FAIL .

The alternator upgrade is really as easy as it sounds.

If your looking for a J truck on Craigslist and they say no rust, they are lying! LOL

do you mean the ones you hear right before one of your rear wheels bounces down the road beside you and then in front of you?

Been there and done that.
