I pulled the entire drivetrain - advise please for seperation and long term storage
I pulled the motor/trans/Txfr case all in one shot.
I plan to store these long term, any advise on long term storage?
also I will need to seperate the TXfr case from the Tranny - I noticed there is a 10 inch "extention/adaptor piece between the tranny and transfer case - where do i need to seperate them? at the adaptor to tranny or at the adaptor to Txfr case
I am keeping all three components in case i need them in the future for my own rig....I have drained all motor oil...should I drain the tranny and remove the tourque converter?....what about the transfer case....
Thanks for any help

you would be better off putting oil back it the motor and then pulling the plugs and add a little in there as well and every month i would turn the engine over with a bar and add a little more oil in through the plug holes. also you shouldnt need to seperate it but if you do seperat the addapter at the trans is your best bet.

thanks ..i was thinking the same thing - adding a little oil every couple months thru the plug holes and rotating...thats why i drained the oil, so i had room for awhile

i agree put oil back in motor maybe even a quart over full if its gonna sit for a long time with temp chages and humidity it will get condensation in the oil pan and on the crank wich will cause rust... and the oil down the spark plug holes is good advise too but put the plugs back in at least fringer tight so nothing gets in there.. i would also make sure there isnt any fuel in the carb... i remove carbs ad cover intake with cardboard like a piece or ceral box cut to fit and duct tape

To add to the excellent replies from the others, I would suggest pulling the valve covers and loosening all the rock bridges just before you put the engine to bed. What this does is close all the valves and take tension off those valve springs that are under compression. If you coat each bore with enough oil, you will have very little or NO rust in the cylinders and there's no way moisture can get into them. I usually spray cosmoline into each bore then roll the engine over several times to get it everywhere, replace the plugs then loosen the rockers. Oh, and close off the exhaust collector or ports too!
Hasn't failed me in 35 years.

Okie dokie....I will put fresh oil back in..probably 6 qts??? to make sure everything is covered up down under?
I will also loosen the valves as suggested
I ( had planned) to plan to squirt a bit of oil into the plug holes every six months or so and rotate the engine a couple turns ....can I do this if all the valves are closed(by loosening the rockers)

I agree with all the other post except one.
I assume its a 727 with a 229 behind it?
In 95% of the removals I do, I pull the t-case from the adapter and leave the adapter on the tranny.
It might just be my personal preference, but seems easier for me.

As long as you pull the spark plugs the engine will turn over easier since you aren't dealing with 200 lbs spring pressures on at least two cylinders. Yer pulling the plugs to add oil so there you are!

YEP! The adapter has a seal against the transmission and 'Should' not allow atf to escape.
Not to mention the fact that a transfer case with adapter is much more difficult to ID than a 727 with one attached.

Quick and easy way to seal up an engine is to pull the valve covers and to back off the rocker arms until all the valves are closed. Write your self a note and tie it to the engine. Put any stuff you took out in a zip lock bag and tie to the tag. I would add another qt to the sump too.

plug off all inlets to engine for rodents. coarse steel wool in the water pump inlet, the exhuast manifolds, and blank off the intake or leave a carb on it,pcv valve hole, etc.
