Thanks. It's pretty durable/tough. It's a PITB to get it off if you "need" to.

Question??
Did you spray the top or should I say Outside of the rim, bake..then spray the backside and bake or both at the same time and bake together?
Great job. I will be doing this soon hopefully....

i worked on a powder coat line back in the early 90's. if we had to do any rework we'd acid dip the parts and start over.

It's a 2-stage process (at home). I actually put them face down first and spray the backside and outside, then bake.
After they cool down a bit, I flip them onto the backside and spray the face and upper lip of the rim outside, then bake.
Doing it this way keeps the face of the rim looking spectacular with the glossy finish. The double-bake for the backside sometimes causes the powder to get a slight matte finish to it (some loss of gloss). Since it's the backside, it doesn't matter as much.
I may pick up some of Eastwood's high-temp powder to see if the loss of gloss on the backside can be alleviated.
Have fun doing yours ... it's always fun.
I have even done a CJ-5 frame at home.

Can you tape off areas, paint, remove tape and bake?
or will it run.
Or do multi colors?

I actually read you did that and was amazed...
All I need is everything including the oven. I have a lot of friends who want me to do different powder coating jobs for them mostly motorcycle stuff. I am chompin at the bit thinking about it.

Awesome results Greg. I am going to be coating an Edelbrock performer over the winter sometime. Going to use a Nickle colored powder. I am hoping it turns out as good as the wheels you did. 2 thumbs up from me.

Two questions $$$? And what about the area where the tire contacts the rim. Do you need to keep that area clean or paint free?

I bought the kit on Ebay from a private seller for about $70 with 1-lb of Mirror Chrome and 2-oz of blue metallic flake (you add it to any other chrome powder to get a sparkly effect). This is the base Eastwood kit, which runs $99.99 on Eastwood's Website at http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powder-coating/powder-coat-guns/original-hotcoat-powdercoating-gun.html
I would suggest getting the slightly more expensive kit at http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powder-coating/powder-coat-guns/hotcoat-deluxe-powder-coat-kit.html because you get two 1-lb powder containers, and extras that are useful when doing powder (like SS wire for doing small parts).
Their kits have really come down in price from when I had bought my original one 10 years ago. Back then the $139.99 kit was around $200 or more.
I also bought 5-lbs of mirror black and 2 lbs each of Chrome Smoke and Silver Vein from Eastwood.com ... If you buy Eastwood's free shipping deal, you also get about 15% off every powder order. It was a no-brainer, since I'll be powdercoating alot of other stuff, including 3-4 more sets of FSJ rims.
As for the bead seat area question, that can be coated. Stock rims are painted there. The powdercoat doesn't hurt anything.

You have to use hi-temp fiberglass tape, which Eastwood sells. You can do multiple colors, but if there are any holes, etc, the powder can and will spray "around corners" and blead through holes to other areas. There is more than one way to do it though ... just takes practice and trial-n-error to get it right.
There is also the issue of the coatings getting a slight satin sheen to them, when they are re-baked. I notice that the newer Eastwood powders bake at 375 instead of the older 400-450. Perhaps some experimentation with the lower 375 temps will prevent the satin sheen from developing. Eastwood's website says cure at 350-400 for some powders, so I may experiment with some different combos and curing temps.

Why I was asking, is a Buddy of mine is building a MATER for his
son. He had the rims power coated to look like they were rusted.
This was a little expensive.
I was just wondering if you could do the same thing.
The front end is on the ground so he can rewire the engine.
Thats a bat mobile body handing from the rafters
before white rims
after rusty rims ( at Back to the Brick cruise)

How does the DIY powder coat perform compared to a factory finish. Does it chip more readily than an OEM powder coat?

i don't remember. it was a big hot tank, we'd dip trees full of little parts in there. rinse with water when they were done, and then back through the washer, drying oven, powder booth, and curing ovens.
it's probably the same stuff pro power coat shops or metal shops use.

Mater ... now that's cool!
OK, now I see what you're referring to. Yes, it looks like it's a combination for a couple different colors sprayed over each other BEFORE baking. You just overspray a little "rust color" here and there to get a light dusting here ... heavier spots there. Then bake it. It all flows out and would end up looking like that.
Maybe I chould powdercoat my entire Waggy to look all rusted.
