Axle Identification

How do I know what set of gears are in the axles on my J-2000? I know that it is a Dana 44 and it was made in 1970.

From easiest to hardest -
1) look at tag on axle, read ratio and/or tooth count
2) rotate driveshaft and count number of revs to roate both rear wheels 1 turn (only approximate - you have to know what the likely ratios are)
3) remove cover and read tooth count stamped into ring gear. ie "41 10" is 41/10 = 4.10s.

The axle has a cover over the gears that's held on with bolts. When you remove the cover, the gears are exposed. If you look at the axle, it should be obvious.
