New Wagoneer with pics (lots of pics)

Well, I bought a wagoneer. It isn't a j truck, but it runs and drives. 258, don't know what transmission or transfer case or anything, but I would assume that whatever came with the 258 is what it's got. A little rough, but a good project. 99% rust free? And the AC blows nice and cold!

Power steering is out. Guy said it was leaking and worked when he got it a few weeks ago. I bought it from a used car dealer... I beleive he got it on a trade in.

I paid a lot less than what is on the windshield, but still not sure if I got a great deal. Kind of an impulse purchase. Hope I don't regret it.

Looks decent. I spy locking hubs on the front.

You might have an NP-208, which is a part time transfer case.

Dunno about the transmission.

If you paid about half the asking price, it's a nice buy. Looks like it has new upholstery. Nice.

Fill up the PS reservoir and see what happens. The return line may be rotten and leaking, allowing it to drain out while just sitting around.

That's the plan. I'm hoping that works!

A fine looking Wagoneer

The transmission is most likely the venerable Torqueflite 727 3speed automatic. If you paid a good bit less than the $1350 on the window , with a very fresh looking interior, cold A/C and it runs well with minimal rust......then you got yourself a good deal in my opinion. I agree that with manual hubs, and it being an '81 model, it probably has an NP208 transfer case. It would be the one I would want if I were looking. There is a round aluminum tag pinned to the backside of the transfer case just to the left of the rear output shaft where the driveshaft connects that should have "NP208" stamped in it.

Where abouts in Texas are you?

I dunno when Jeep started or stopped installing Torqueflite 999 behind 258's.
So, there is a slim chance it could be a TF999, but my guess is it is a TF727

Very strong transfercase.
This unit it sought out by many to replace the NP219/228/229 in other FSJ.

Very nice. You can't beat the 258 and it will be a bonus if you have the 208 case w/locking hubs.

Now all you need to do is remove that god awful tacky GW body and swap the entire drivetrain over to your J10.

Lee, I probably have the rear light lenses you are missing along with that rear bumper. I'll check when I get home.

Edit...I also have a factory roof rack and good front blinkerhousings with lenses. Yours look broken.

That looks pretty clean and rust free. Congrats!
Do you have a 2WD-4WD switch on the bottom of the dash to the right of the steering column? It was kind of rare for a Wagoneer Limited to be optioned with a part time transfer case. What year? I am guessing 81-83.

It's an 82. There is a lever on the floor, and a switch on the left side of the steering wheel on the dash. Not sure about to the right. I'll have to check on that.

Could definitely use those. Roof rack might be hard to ship (!!) but I may be able to get to houston in the not too distant future or have someone pick it up for me.

Not sure what you mean about a switch on the left side. What is the shift pattern on the flag shifter handle?

On our Eagle, the vacuum switch for 4wd is left of the steering wheel. Seen here:

In the FSJs, this switch is to the right of the wheel and at the bottom of the dash.

This shifter is a 229 style. It has Hi, N, Lo printed on the handle. This one is in the Eagle but is from a GW.

This is an example of the flag shifter for the 219:

I don't have a picture handy for the 208 flag shifter.

The 208 shifter should have 2Hi-4Hi-N-4Lo on the shifter handle. 2Hi is with the handle down to the floor.

It is indeed the one that was on CL. I had seen it on CL, and it just happened to be right down the street from where I live.
