Is there a way to reproduce the vin sticker on the door jam.

what do people do when they have their jeep repainted or do a cab swap?

Serial number goes with the chassis, or at least does in states that define this. The sequential part of the VIN should be stamped in the chassis somewhere. In CJs it's in the top frame rail, above the front right wheel. FSJs must have something similar.

The door sticker is only informative. If you want to retain it for originality, you'd have to have a graphics shop reproduce it. Repro stickers are available for CJs, but not for FSJs AFAIK. The metal VIN plate should go with chassis, so you'd remove it from the old sheet metal and install it on the new.

I'm assuming there should be a riveted plate on the firewall as well as the door jam sticker?

I would like to reproduce the metal/sticker on the door jam. Half of mine is not legible now.

No aftermarket source AFAIK. A graphics shop could likely make a new sticker for you, but you would have to supply a design. May cost a lot. I'm sure tihs sort of thing is done when restoring valuable cars, but the cost may be prohibitive.

Yes it is, for popular restorations, but not for FSJ's. A graphics shop can make one, but as others said, there is a tag on the firewall. The sticker was for additional info, so it's no biggie if it disappears.

Don't try and peel it off with the intention of saving it. The glue has VOID written in it.

What if you frame under a body from a different make, do you know the rules on this? I ask becuase I am thinking of doing this on another project.

I fully realize that most of the folks here are honest , but it is a federal offense to remove and reattach a VIN tag. If you replace the cab, the original VIN tag remains on the body. The VIN on the dash should be the VIN that is registered. You should keep some type of documentation on the replacement cab to show DMV or Law Enforcement if they ask. If you provide no documentation there is a 90% chance you will be impounded until the VIN is checked and cleared as non-stolen. ASK ME HOW I KNOW......

I spend a lot of time building CJ's and the VIN tag is attached to the wiper motor. It takes 5 minutes to remove the wiper motor and VIN plate since it is screwed on, but there are 2 rivets that are also used.

The rivets that attach the public VIN ( the one on the dash) are special rivets that are not available. They are know as Roset rivets. For Law enforcement people in the know, a VIN plate attached with regular pop rivets is justification for putting your truck on the hook.

Sorry to hijack a thread, but I can't find anywhere else to ask... I have a 86 J-20, i think, but the VIN sticker is missing. I can see the adhesive residue from where it used to be. There isn't a number on the dash. I have found a plate on the firewall above the driver's side inner fender but it isn't in the typical format. it is a 13 digit number. and above it is a 7 digit number. It certainly is possible that this is not an 86, but the what is it? Are there any other locations that might have the VIN. The frame hump on the passenger has the same 6 digits as the last on the number on the firewall. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Vehicle VINs grew to 17 digits in 1981. At least for Jeeps. Prior to that they were 13 digits. The plate on the firewall is sometimes referred to as the "data plate" because it also has the factory codes for the major options on your Jeep. I just looked at the data plate for my 78 Cherokee. The top line is a 7 digit number and letters that I do not know how to decode. The second line has a few numbers and letters that are the vehicle option codes. Finally the bottom line is the 13 digit VIN.
