screams from the garage!

well over the last 3 weeks I have changed the rear main seal and pan gaskets 3 times on my 258 and it still leaks!!!

I used fel-pro seal/gasket sets......then dealer seals with a one piece pan gasket and lastly a combination of felpro and a healthy application of rtv.
So its destined to be a leaker and to think I could have bought 3-4 cases of oil for what I spent in time and mtls.

How well are you cleaning the gasket surface? What are you using to clean the surface? Which RTV are you using? And lastly, only apply a TINY amount of rtf, too much and you are more likely to cause a leak then stop it.

Rear main seal

Don't take this wrong but did you follow the TSM directions exactly? I had a friend help me rebuild a 258 once and he did the rear main himself using an "old school method" and said it'll never leak. Yeah right! Famous last words. Two weeks later I had to re do it and I did it exactly as the TSM indicated soapy water and all. It never leaked again for the three years I still had it. This is just my experience and I would think as long as there is nothing wrong with your crank, oil pan or rear main cap it should work for you.
If you need the directions from the TSM let me know.

BTW I used felpro gaskets both times.

Did you inspect the pan real good in the back corners? I had one leak after a gasket & seal replacement. Turned out that the pan was cracked in the corner where the 'U' bend met the pan rail.

Valve cover leaking.

Or thrust bearing out of whack and the crankshaft if moving fore and aft destroying your rear seal. Grab the harmonic balancer and if you can pull or push it more than 1/4 inch.... you need to have the crankshaft out.

Jeeps just want to leak. If you stop it there, it will start someplace else.

Do something else. Then give it another shot and try to stop it. Clean it real good and following the directions.........

put some UV dye in there to spot exactly where the leak is coming from... that way you've got a better idea of what needs fixing...

All good advice from what I see thus far--especially dye-tracking.

You need to make sure there's now imperfection in the pin of the crank that might be admitting oil leakage, or abrading the seal....

well I did the UV dye trick , got it from NAPA here in Canada for around $50.00, and found that there was a leak half way along the oil pan to block . So the oil was running along the oil pan lip and hitting the bell housing then running down the access plate making it appear as though the RMS was leaking.
So I then used some Seal-All over the leak, covered that with some foil I got from a cigarette package ( paper burned off) then another coat of S-A covered with more foil till I had 3 layers . Let it cure over night and guess what..........no leaks!

We say this about our Porsche's but I guess it will work on Jeeps too?

Do you know how to tell when your Porsche has burned through all it's oil?

When it stops leaking

lol my garage(ok carport) has heard many of choice words!

like toby keith says"fits gonna hit the shan"

what kinda oil psi do you have? are you letting it "setup" for a while before starting it back up? maybe the pressure is blowing it out.

My 86 GW refuses to stop leaking too after rear main, pan gasket, etc but it's receiving a freshly built 360 from my 91 in a few weeks so it'll be all good. My solution for the time being....making sure it's parked in the garage with an oil-resistant coating on the floor and not out on my concrete driveway.

I agree, seems as though Jeeps just like to leak. We had an 86 Chero V6 that leaked for at least 7 or 8 of the 11 years we owned it. And that was with dealer maintenance always.

Somewhat off topice, but for stubborn leaks and for things I have no interest in taking apart again, I always use "The Right Stuff". Its made by permatex, doesn't mind a dirty mating stuff and is very reliable. Beats regular RTV by a mile!
