They also chrome plated plastic back then.

I use to fix a machine that did this.

I really wanted to use the chrome insert from the Super console in the console I'm fabricating to keep the vintage(ish) look but upon inspection it is just too pitted to use.

Thanks for the restoration link, I may pursue that or look for NOS or just do something else entirely.

thats bad, but the 80s were worse with all the plastic, chrome plated or not. Then they stuck all that crap on the dash in 86 yuck.

That's not restricted to the 70s - my 1950 Willys' dash panel trim is chrome plated pot metal as was the hood ornament. Finding a pit free hood ornament is challenging...
