First Wheeling trip

I went on my first wheeling trip with the SoCalUltimate4X4 (SCUFF) club on the fourth with my bone stock '86 Waggy. I have to say, I was verry impressed with how tough and capible these rigs are. I had to be strapped a few times, but overall, I was happy with the performance.

I did run into one problem though. Every time I was inclined, I started leaking gas.
Are the stock gas caps supposed to seal? I was looking at mine a little more closely, and the female end of the filler is chewed up pretty bad. Is it easy to repalce the female end, or is there any other suggestions on how I can seal up the gas cap? With the price of gas these days and the gas mileage I get, I cannot afford to loose any gas. Thanks in advance.

new cap from autozone are like $8.00
pull the drivers rear inside quarter panel off and inspect the fuel filler neck you may have to drop the gas tank cover

Yea, I was sitting on that incline for a few minutes getting the tow strap hooked up and then trying to pull my Jeep up the waterfall. Probibly like 5 minutes or longer. I know that the gas cap doesn't lock closed like I am used to seeing. In fact, the only thing that keeps me from loosing my cap at all is ths fact that it is a locking gas cap. I am not sure if a new cap would work, but willing to try anything. I think I need the filler replaces as it looks chewed up. I will try to get some pics of it and see what y'all think.

nice lookin rig; looks like you were running around with at least one naxja fella, was his cherk still more or less intact? Can't believe how many of those fellas wind up chopping those XJs to death.

I've noticed that while mine doesn't leak gas on inclines, the carb sure doesn't like it on the potholed climbs, moreso than other carb'd rigs I've ridden in. And I'm i the same boat as Rocket Dog; sitting five minutes on her tail like that I'm pretty sure the waggy would have marked her territory at least a little.

No, all windows were intact. I got a few dents along the rocker panels, but that is what they are there for. Eventually, I will build some rock sliders for a little protection.
