New Seats!
I decided to ditch the beat bench seat I've been suffering with for a set of buckets.
I bought some good condition bucket seats from qtrac82. Color was wrong but the seats were right so i decided to dye/paint them. Whadaya gonna do...good condition seats are hard to come by....you can't be picky
Anyway....my research pointed to using SEM vinyl paint. Supposedly if you prep them properly it works well.
I scrubed the crap out of them with the SEM soap and applied their vinyl prep and went to town
Before:
After:
They look a little shinier than they really are because of the flash. They look real natural...I'm real pleased. I'll install them over the weekend and post some pics.
I guess we'll see how they hold up. I ended up using 4 rattle cans of the SEM ColorCoat "Landau Black". I bought 8, thinking I would need that much.

Are those vintage low back CJ seats?
And what is the center section from?
I like that, simple, and has a "stock" look to them.

Thanks! They are stock FSJ low back buckets. They came out of a mid 70's J Truck. The center section is just a stock FSJ center flip up arm rest that came out of another truck. It looks just like the other ones I have had on my '79s.

Looks really good. I was thinking I was going to have to get mine recovered but that looks like brand new.

Wait till mid August and your sweating like a banshee if you don't have a gloss-black back then, I'll like it even better

Yep...it's a bit of an experiment to see how well the paint holds up. I'll keep everyone posted.
I feel I prepped them well and the paint really seemed to adhere nicely to the vinyl.
We'll see...

Man, those came out great!
I've used vinyl die/paint with good results on several occasions -I even used white over red once and, with a few coats, looked great and lasted a long time (and these were seats in a boat).
My only reccommendation is, use a mask or plenty of venitillation! That stuff made me pretty loopy after spraying it!

FYI, I did the same thing to my 76 Triumph Spitfire bucket seats about 20 years ago, and the dye/paint held pretty good. Four years later I did some touch-up where it started to wear off in a few places...just in time to please the $%^& who stole it from my driveway one night.

Ok....got them installed. The holes didn't exactly line up on the outer brackets but nothing a drill couldn't fix.
Man...what a difference as far as comfort though. I think I'm sitting about 4 inches higher..had to re-adjust all of my mirrors. Much more support all the way around. I can't move the seat quite as far back as I could with the bench but it goes back far enough.
Now I just need to get some decent seat belts made for buckets...with the extenders. It's always something! I'm resisting putting carpet in it...though with the seats looking so nice it makes the floors stick out. Carpet is just the first step to rotted floor boards in these rigs.
Here's a pick of them installed:
