Where should my tranny get worked on?

Just curious if any of you are in the Mass. area and have had good luck with a transmission rebuilder. It's definitely time to get it done. I'm just not familiar with the mechanics up here. And man, the horror stories I've heard about AAMCO...

Thanks again for the info,

Find a local shop that specializes in transmissions. They'll usually rebuild your trans, rather than just replacing it with a unit that was rebuilt by underpaid factory workers in some thrid world country.

You already know about the aamco stories so check the phone book for a smaller shop. Check with your local BBB to see if a smaller shop has had any complaints against them. Stay away from a "chain" tranny shop.

I think there used to be an engine rebuild shop right on the base there. They rebuilt a set of heads for me. It was called Golens Engine Service. You may want to drop in there and ask them for a recommendation on a tranny shop.
They also used to build some nice looking performance AMC engines.
The last time I had a tranny rebuild I had it done at Shrewsbury Transmission but thats all the way out in Northborough, MA on rt20. Pretty far away from you. But they did a good job.

One more thing I just thought of. There is a website at:

New England Online Wheelers...you might get some good recommendations out of the folks on the message board there.

I say order a rebuild kit, gsmikies video and take it to the Auto Skills Development Center on your base. You know what they say, if you want it done right, do it yourself!

Take your time and be extremely careful who you leave your truck with. At this point, I could write a book on "horror stories with tranny shops"

If your mechanically inclined, I'd order GSMikies tape, get a rebuild kit and get after it.

J-truck thing summed it up best. If you want it done right...................

Good luck!

Hey, thanks for all the info! Chrism, there was a Golens Engine Service on base, as I understand, but poor Hanscom just keeps getting smaller and smaller.

I will check out shrewsbury's and I'll call over to the Auto Skills shop for a suggestion.

Man, it'll be nice to go forward again...

Here's some trannies in your area, John. Buy one of these and take it to a shop and have them throw it in. Cheapest way to go.

Yep I just checked their website and it appears that they have moved up to NH. Still wouldn't hurt to call or email...as they might still be able to give some good info.

Ahhh, I want to go have them rebuild my motor while they rebuild my tranny...wonder how much that would be!

Thanks, both of you for your help. Actually, calling those places up and just grabbing a tranny with not too many miles on it might not be a bad idea!

I'm going to give golen's a call. Thanks for that link!

Oh man, I'm getting excited!
