    What a shame...

So several months back this thing was on CL for ~$800.
    Running 6cyl rig with intake/4bbl/header.
Certainly not worthy of being parted IMHO.
The NT Cherokees weren?t as plentiful as other models.

I do like the NT Cherokees.

This guy usually buys rigs that have title problems. Things like no pink, really backed up fees, incomplete title transfers, etc. Even at $800 it would be tough to find a buyer if it has a few hundred bucks in backed fees, half transferred title, and smog requirements.

I'm with you though. This could have EASILY been a nice driver.

Looks like a nice International Travellall in the background! I've always loved those trucks. Amazing how many people in CA let back fees build up instead of just filing for non-op. It's ridiculous.

What I think happens is registration comes due, people sit on it, then they go to register at the last minute but it fails smog for wahtever reason or they just don't smog it so they park it. Once you pass the due date for registration, you cannot non-op it. So they park it figuring they will deal with it later. 2 years later, they want to move and fees are at $300+. New owner buys it, AND those fees, AND still has to smog it even though it failed last time. In the mean time, 2 years of dry rot has set in on vacuum lines, rats/mice have nibbled on things, gas has gone stale, carb gaskets and soft fuel lines have dried and cracked. etc.

Tree huggers in California then giggle a little because vintage iron ends up crushed.

                  Yep. Pretty much.

I really hate CA DMV. They're incredibly expensive and incredibly inefficient at everything except separating you from your money.

My wife and I each go *very* sick (I was nearly dead before I started dialysis) almost concurrently, for about 3 years in a row between the 2 of us.... so stuff slipped between the cracks, stuff like vehicle registrations.

We're both back to normal, more or less, but I think my single biggest line item expense this year was getting vehicles out of DMV jail.

I should say I own 12 motorcycles, and none of them worth more than $5k, most less than $3k, so it's not like I'm some kind of tech zillionare with expensive toys. About half of them are either dirt bikes vintage bikes on non-op. All the back fees really hurt. They were on average about $600 each.

ouch! you can bypass/erase backfees with a few methods.
one is via a statement of facts stating you were unaware when buying and claiming you were told it was on PNO.
Another is if it is 25+yrs old they cannot charge you back fees.
Last is transfer title out of state via friend/relative then treat it as new purchase but requires VIN verification which can be a real pita.

We were told by a counter staff agent (I refuse to call them customer service representatives) that DMV had recently tightened up on their procedures for waiving fees. Among other things, counter agents were dis-empowered to make the decisions. Now you have to write a letter to Sacramento. We were going to try to get a "hard luck" waiver because of the health issues, but just didn't want the hassle -- or, frankly, to give DMV the opportunity to decline, which would piss me off again. And, I wanted to start riding and driving some of these again sooner than later.

AAA is easiest, they will call sac. main office while you wait.
Local DMV office is filled w/ clueless folks and wait times are absolutely insane.

And god forbid you dare to own a pickup truck in CA, which are classified by California as a commercial vehicle and charged a yearly "weight fee" based on their GVWR that is often more than registration itself... You can own a small pickup (e.g. Ford Ranger) and have to pay the fee, meanwhile a Motorhome has no weight fee. Makes sense right?

The loophole is you can register your truck with a camper shell and get it on regular car registration but then you are technically not allowed to transport cargo in the back...

I guess I can see how one could get behind on life and let back fees build up if you owned more than 3-4 vehicles, that didn't really occur to me. The most I've owned at once is 4 (2 cars, 1 truck, 1 motorcycle). I decided to simplify my life and I've owned the same two vehicles (GW and a 2002 Mazda Miata) for the last 4 years. I get real tempted searching through Craigslist multiple times a week though.

Why do you folks in California stay there if you hate the laws so much? It sounds like you'd be happier living in a place like Oklahoma that doesn't give a crap what you do with your cars so long as you pay the property tax...I mean registration...once a year. Just get used to the flat landscape and "entertaining" weather. It's worth it.
