DOORS what will work on what year?

    I have a 1976 j -10

looks like I may need another passenger door.

I see it looks like the 76 j truck uses different latch system than my 88 wagoner

but basic door design looks the same.

can I only use FSJ doors from the earlier years ?

or are all doors the same core design which allows the mechanisms

    to be switched out.

    bump

just need some reassurance from someone who knows for sure,...

everything looks like it will swap

but I am not an expert.

want to make sure before I buy more door(s)

At some point in 1979 Jeep ran out of the early style lock and began using the new. All 1979 FSJ's I have seen (quite a few) had the new style. I have heard of a few 1979's that had the early style, I suspect they are very early and few.

The doors can be modified with a bit of effort. It is a matter of changing the hole location for lock mounting screws and I believe the lock cylinder hole in the outer panel as well.

        oh crap
        at a glance
        holes in jamb looked same
but a glance can be deceiving

a lot more solid late model doors avail than early ones I think

        thanx for the response

My 78 has the newer style latches.

I remember swapping a newer door onto a 75 j10. I a can’t remember if I swapped the latch or the catch. I may have swapped the catch. Either way it wasn’t very difficult and it worked fine. The only real annoying part was that the vent windows were different styles.

In reference to post number 5:

This is indeed a confusing post.

The latches and catches are not interchangeable. You cannot use the old style latch with the new style catch or vise versa. Swapping either the latch on the door or the catch on the pillar requires considerable changes to the mounting structures. Neither are a bolt in swap.

The vent window however is a different matter. I believe the old and new styles can be swapped without any change to the mounting structure.

                      thanx for the info

that lets me know to look for a 1976 type door,...

(if I end up needing one)

some scary looking work on the passenger door

but a good blasting, or sanding and digging

will let me know what we are dealing with and how severe it is.

                      thanx again,.....

79 or 80 was the switchover. i put newer doors and strikers on my '74,it was fairly easy to do.

The door on my 75 had an unfortunate encounter with a street sign. I pulled a door off a parts truck I already had. When I swapped the door I also swapped the catch so it would work correctly. It has been a few years since the swap but it wasn’t much of a problem
