How many times have you heard...

"why not just get a more reliable vehicle?..aren't you a little too attached?"

i know these people mean well, and there's nothing i can say to them to help them understand the sickness. i just spend a week of ny spring, on my back, in the cold mud, trailing blood and swimming in gasoline and gear oil; and for all the swearing that went on, it doesn't get much better. the victory all the sweeter because of each and every stubborn inaccessible and rusted over bolt. every junk yard find, just another big hit off the pipe. even my "car guy" friends think it's nuts...and they're probably right.

i am unapologetically "a little too attached", athalia is my girl (89 GW), and i'll keep fixing her until there's nothing left to fix. the jeep gods smiled upon me today, and my girl is starting to get healthy for the first time in the two years i've had her. it's times like this where all you can do is crack a beer and tell the only people who could possibly understand.

use life up,
mike

never. my trusty GW is parked outside the office in -30 weather when people are calling in with current model cars that won't start.

same goes for the snow storms.

the GW is always there, always on time.

I'm sure few people on this site are enthusiastically supported by friends and spouses in pursuit of our DIY passion of choice. You need to have a repertoire of ready responses to critics suitable to what you already know about their interests.

Why plant a garden? Just buy veggies at the store.
Why travel? Just read the brochures.
Why read a book? Just watch the movie.
Why knit a sweater? Just go buy one.
Why paint a picture? Just use a camera.
Why play an instrument? Just play a CD.
Why criticize my choice of interests? Pay attention to your own stuff.

You get the idea.

X2 on Ristow's post. My 89 starts even with the choke lashed open (sticks otherwise). It just needs a few minutes to warm up. Granted I spent countless hours cursing /bleeding on it. The end result has been worth it though. The wife and all my other cars and possessions(except one shotgun)will go before the Wag goes.

My wife, brother and sons' know the pride of doing it yourself. My grandsons are learning it too. And they understand attachment. A former friend would only buy a jeep it it already had the options lift and tires that suited him and a mechanic to do the rest with only the "expensive" & "brand name" parts and he would never get his hands dirty. If I mentioned I was working on the waggy he would make remarks such as get something better, why don't you have a shop do it, those parts are cheap. He won't even 4 wheel his anymore cause it gets dirty. Hence - former friend.

I have heard that music. Mine roars to life at the first touch of the starter at 20 below. Just start it and drive. I can't complain.

That's pretty darn close to what my dad says, just in a different way. "You workin' on that thing again?"

And many more only buy them because of the name on the fender that sounds more expensive than their neighbors.

WOW I never thought about it.

The fact I own mine & have it the way I want simply states I don't care what they think & I don't try to control them & I"M GOOD. Nuff time wasted on this subject.

My rear licence plate works with Buford. It's a Jeep thing you wouldn't understand.

THE END

No one questions you when you pull up and pull them out of a snow bank, or break through two feet of snow to make sure the old couple at the end of the block are doing alright or need food. People stopped asking once they figured out that I could get to them then get them where ever they need to go no matter what.

A friend of mine that just bought a 2011 Chevy Z71 crew cab fully loaded asked me the same thing. My reply "What it cost you for 1 month of ownership of that new truck including payment, insurance, and higher priced tag in Mississippi would fix everything that might go wrong with my Jeep for a whole year".

Plus:
1. New vehicles require a computer to get a diagnosis before starting to work on them FSJ's don't.

2. New vehicles have crumple zones. FSJ's use new vehicles as a crumple zone.

x2 what Chrome said. I simply ask people what their car payments are, there insurance, what their last smog cert set them back, and they get the idea. I finish off with "How much for a new headlight?" I'm just laughing all the way to the next gas station.

I've never even considered what others think when I get in mine/ buying more parts. But come to think of it, I guess I take it for granted that everyone around me is supportive (or atleast to tire to continue debating with me).
