    A 401 Finally

Well it was a long search, but finally acquired a 401

The condition: Per the PO, was recently rebuilt(less than 20k) per PO.
The compression seams to confirm with an average of 185.

Price was very right, just had to drive to get it.

So, next step: I would love to go with a six speed(this is a 79 M/T Cherokee Chief).

So if I understand the to do's:
    Need 80-88 FSJ front axle with Driver Side Drop;
Six speed trany and associated Xfer case

Moving Forward - ever so slowly

willing to look at any options,

right now I'm looking at the NSG370, but admittedly I haven't researched much yet.

      Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

In either case, it appears I will have to replace the front axle with a driver side drop from an 80-88

You could run a Dana 300 behind the NSG although I think the trans will not be too happy if you plan to use the 401's power on a regular basis. The Dana 300 will allow you to keep your front axle. There is also the option of a Dodge NP208. It should bolt up without too much fuss either.

401...awesome, sounds like a good combo with the 6 speed.

Didn't know that you could marry anything other than what Novak has listed

            Transfer Case Compatibility
The 370 was factory married to the NP231, NP241OR and NP241J transfer cases. It features the common Jeep / Dodge 6-bolt transfer case mounting face for driver's side drop transfer cases. The 23 spline output shaft makes it compatible

Yep, and those things make it possibly compatible with the D300 and Dodge NP208 due to the same pattern and spline count.

Interesting, that means a few more options. What I'm reading suggests this tranny can hold up well as long as your not going crazy with it.

Yes it will live if you aren't dumping the clutch at high rpms and your not flogging it regularly.

Depending on the input length of the t-case you are going with you might need a spacer or clocking ring. But the passenger output options I mentioned should be adaptable to that trans.

Yep, and all things being equal, I would pick a gear tcase over a chain,,,,any day of the week.

I really don't know how many folks here have trashed a tcase while wheeling...but gear driven cases are tougher... Now there is a clear dilineation between a case which came from the factory w/ a cummins or duramax in front of it.

And there's he rub(no pun intended). I guy wants the capabilities of the six speed for the week day, and the the toughness of the T18 for the weekend, and it all has to fit behind a 401 if possible

                          sure no problem.

Theres transmissions out there, but they are only 2wd it's really frustrating. If only you could use something like a t56.

That is also an option. You can find a divorced NP205 or Dana 20(known as a Dana 24 I think Ford might be the only ones to use it though). Build a custom crossmember and mount it up. With that you can pull the t-case and run it in Rwd most of the time and put the case back in it for the weekends you can get out and go wheelin.
