Fuel sender suction tube too shallow?

I always suspected there was a lot more gas in the tank after running out.

Today I removed my sender unit to repair a rust-broken ground tab. With the thing in my hand I noticed that when the float is all the way down, and the strainer sock off, the bottom of the suction tube is about 3" higher than the float.

Then I measured from the level of the o-ring to the bottom of the tank and compared that to the distance measured from the bottom of the sender flange to the end of the suction tube. Again about 3" distance.

When the sock is on the tube, it reaches to the bottom alright, but since its porous, then I'm still officially out of gas when the level reaches the bottom of the metal suction tube, but with 2-3 (?) gallons still in the tank. At least on my tank. Seems like maybe the suction tube should be longer.

Is this really the stock arrangement or is there a DSPO thing going on?

I believe the replacement sending unit I got from RockAuto is the same way. When I replaced mine I noticed a PO had added a few inches of rubber hose to the bottom of the old sending unit, probably to correct this issue. I did not put the hose on the new sending unit and have ran out of gas (or failed to pick it up) when the gauge still read 1/4 of a tank. I'm not sure if the BJs one is any different.

The sending unit manufacture by Crown Automotive, sold under part number CRO5363490 on 4wd.com, and pictured here, is too short as noted in your post. I notified them it was inaccurately listed for J series trucks. The one pictured here on BJ's site looks like the right one to match original equipment.

FWIW, I was able to use my old sending unit and sock, along with the plastic float from the new one to get mine working. The brass floats are a common culprit in failure, as they fill with gas over the years.

I also added a few inches of fuel line to the end of the pickup tube of BJ's unit. It works.

I think I'm going to do the same. I'm tired of always worrying every time my gauge gets below 1/2. Plus it's more likely to suck air, which probably isn't as big of a deal w/ a mechanical pump and a carb. The only bad thing is you eliminate the sock.

Actually you don't have to lose the sock if you have a good parts guy you may be able to retro fit a newer sock filter from an efi pump to the end of the hose I will get a PN and try this when i put my tank back in

The sock is correct. But too bad the actual sender unit isn't. Actually the BJ sender appears identical to the OEM unit I pulled out. But the OEM unit can't be correct by design. The way it should be designed is that the tube should elbow at the end such that when the sock is installed, it should lay flat on the bottom of the tank. Think I'll try to fabricate something and report back.
