As I mentioned earlier I was at one time designing a swivel frame. I too was concerned about allowing the joint to move freely.

My design used a pressure plate and clutch disk that was adjustable by means of screws fitted with die-springs mounted axially around the disk. My intention was to make the clutch assembly robust enough to carry some of the bending forces as well.

It should work/look like this, with Jeep sheet metal of course, when done:

      Very cool project.

From what I found the guy's who built them in the 50's were: Willock mfg. of Canada

      Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I2myOXCTkY

Picture of their swivel bearing (bushings)

My best guess is they took a stock truck, added the swivel cross members and stiffeners , then cut the original frame and finished up by looping the wires, brake lines and fuel lines (I assume flexible rubber line(s)) though the pivot tube and sent the truck out the door.

Quick update. The driveline is largely in place. I still need to shim the various driveline components to make the u-joint angles match. The rear axle pads aren't welded, so I can rotate the pinion as needed.

I'm surprised how little effect flex has on the swivel driveshaft. I was expecting a much higher angle.

I probably would have gone with a double CV driveshaft but that looks pretty close. What's the restriction from rotating further? How about load torquing?

It is well within the working range of the 1410. It can go quite a bit further without binding.

There are stops to keep it from going past 25 degrees. Not very worried about load torquing.

Run the drive shaft through the artic joint basically a through shaft with a yoak on each end and the artic of the truck is limit less if you didn't have cable running to the back you could essentially rotate the bed or cab 360 degrees with out an issue. Look in to articulating dump trucks made by Volvo and John deer.

The original articulating power wagons had the driveshaft run under the swivel joint, because the swivel was mounted higher than mine. The reason why I didn't do that was that having the swivel closer to the center of the axles made for less steer while articulating.

I am limiting the articulation to about 25 degrees in either direction. Past that, the lower tire gets most of the loading, depriving the upper one of traction.
