    AMC401 Build for itselliot

THE LAST POST will have a link to all photos, post #64 I bought this truck some 5-6 years ago with the intent of a resto mod......but life and several other Jeeps and also some boats ....coupled with retirement and moving to the retirement lake home,.........well you get the idea. SO....here we go...I sold Gertrude the Grand

Harry brought a pile of 401 parts to me with the task of making a running engine out of it. The block appears to have been Honed but has sat around and rusted up.

Pulled all of the core plugs out to begin the cleaning process. The oil passage may need some cleaning.. LOL!

It took some heat but I got the coolant drain plugs out and guess what... plugged solid.

Here is the first batch of junk that I cleaned out of the water passages. Most of it was packed around the rear two cylinders like they all are.

isn`t it popular to clean the blocks in acid bath`s?

Even a acid bath won't get all of the caked in stuff out. I actually use a screwdriver and chisel it out. Once I get the big chunks out and do all of my prep work I will take it in to the machinist and then he will hot tank it.

I have been working on the block to get it ready for the Machinist.
These drain back holes are scary. It looks like a chunk of cast iron could break off at any time. We don't want any chunks going through the engine so I de-burr all of the holes with my die grinder.

I also cleaned up around the lifter bores.

I've always wondered whether some of the overheating problems on these engines were related to the failure to originally clean all of the casting sand out of the water passages. I have seen it left in even after a rebuild. Glad to see you are taking the time to clean it out.

Yep, I spend a lot of time cleaning the blocks.
Here is a shot of the compression ratio calculations. I really like this combo which is basically using off the shelf 1971 401 pistons with the 58cc heads. The resulting compression ratio is 9.66:1. Perfect!

I posted up the internal oil line install on this forum for informational purposes.
Someone asked me to post up how I install the internal oil line so, here goes. First thing I do is stick a 1/2" rod in the cross-over hole in the front to use as a guide to mark where to drill

Well, everything including a 360 for cma is at the machine Shop. I also have a 360 stroker over there too. Now we wait....
In the mean time, i have a Cross Ram 401 and a 401 for Sunbeam Fanatic to assemble.

Do you have a source for more early 401 pistons? If so I've got a couple of motors I'd love to send your way for the same treatment.

I ordered Speed-Pro/TRW L2380NF30 for this one because they were less expensive than Wiseco when you add the cost of the rings in.

Here are the Wiseco pistons but they require expensive rings.
