Put 80 Cherokee Manual Tranny parts in 79 Cherokee will it work ?

Doner parts from 80 chero, 258, t176, 208,. I have a 79 Cherokee Chief. I want to get the manual transmission parts from a 80 Cherokee and install them into my 79 Chief. I will be using the clutch pedal assambly and any other parts needed to convert the 79 to a manual transmission. Will the parts bolt up? As for the transmission. I have a T-18 setup from my CJ7. And will be running a Dana 300 Transfer Case. Will the parts all work or not? I'm not worried about having to change driveshafts or parts like that. I just need to know that the clutch parts will work.

    Has anybody done this? Kevin

What engine is in the Chief?
If it's also a 258 the tranny will work, if it's a 360 your 6cyl trannies will have too short of an input shaft.
As far as the tcase your Chief is a passenger drop, I don't know CJs much, is it the same?
The clutch and pedal assembly from the 80 Chero will swap in fine.
Check your input bearing dimensions before you stuff it in the back of the crank.
Can't tell ya much about the D300.

if he uses the bell from the 258 it should work on the 360 fine. should'nt it?
i mostly know amc cars and on them the t-10 4 speed has a longer input shaft but the 3 speeds are all the same on 6's and 8's
also did i gleam for here that a 6 cly manual trans model might have 4.09 gears. is that just with a t-18?

The 258 and 360/401 use the same bell housing. The T18 behind the V8 used a longer input shaft and an additional spacer between the bell and tranny. The 258, being a longer motor, didn't use the spacer and the shifter located in the same location that way.
You're prolly right about the 4.09 gears. The '75 258 J10 I parted was also 4.09, the auto trucks up to at least '79 seemed to run about 3.54-3.73 something like that.

I thought the transmissions between the i6 and v8 were bolt on affairs? Is it that the 258 tranny will not bolt onto the v8 or is it that without the longer shaft and spacer the shifter assembly will end up in the dash?

as far as the D300 you will probably have to either elongate the holes on the tranny tailshaft for the tc to fit right or you can hope on AA or some other sites(cant remember whichuns) and grab a d300 clocking ring. That should make it work with the new process bolt pattern. I did an AX15 swap into my cj and I ended up just buying the AA clocking kit that came with a shorter input housing for the TC, clocking ring and a sealed bearing.

This website is a great resource on figuring out what can bolt to what
