Good news & bad news on the J-10

Well, the good part is, I have a fresh Weber carb installed along with the Davis HEI.

Bad. The pinion bearings in my rear axle are completely shot. Now that the truck's running smooth and quiet you can hear them rattling like a box full of marbles.

Larry and Flint's mis-haps are still very fresh in my mind.

I don't want Bill driving this truck home. Wish me luck in convincing him not to.

I just had to jump back into the fire didn't I.....

That sucks, but it is fixable. I know you've got a good 4x4 shop close at hand, and I know it won't be a cheap fix. But it IS fixable.

I had to have the rear axle done on my WT. $550 at Mid-Cities in Grand Prairie. Never had an issue after that.

        Hey

        Janie,
You know what ratio it is? The Cherk has all that in it I drove it it seems good. I can check when I get back from Chi town. I would assume the truck is lower geared. The 83 cherk has the WT front & rear Amc 20 rear & 44 front. What kind of TC does it have in it? If your going to do a lot of highway driving it may be worth a thought. If I had to guess I would think it had from 3:31 to a 3:56 somewhere.

Rick, I appreciate the offer, but the rear axle from a WT Cherk won't work in the J trucks.

Lindel, it's getting more expensive with each passing day....

Truck is in good hands. Bill dropped it off with our local 4x4 shop. There Jeepers as well and thank goodness, we get a discount.

You know Janie until this post I don't think I knew that the W/T cherks had a narrower rear than the J trucks do...or if I did I'd forgotten...I've swapped front axles but I guess not rears....so I guess you have to reposition the perches to do the swap?

Sorry it's turning out to be a bigger project than you expected girl...sometimes these old rigs surprise us by how easy they get back on the road...and sometimes the surprise is in the other direction...

How hard are pinion bearings to change?
A new axle would be a LOT cheaper than $550

You goofy cheesehead. The last time I climbed into the back of one of your 18 wheeler's I nearly froze. Had no idea refer rigs had an ambiant air temp of -5

Seriously, Mike I do appreciate the offer, but the shop has already started tearing into my rear axle. It's bad. Apparently the truck sat in water at one point.

Diff fluid was really milky. Everything rusted and pitted badly.

Parts ordered. I should have the truck back next Tuesday. I'm getting out for way less than $550.00.

I love discounts. That's about the only thing I'm lovin right now. Thinking I'm seriously messed up in the head for owning one of these....
