Has anyone actually seen a 1991 engine?
Was looking over my Jeep today and nothing seems to say 1991, except the door sticker. It was built in May of 1991, yet the engine is coded 1990, the exhaust manifold cast 89 and 90, and both axles are date 89. Just curious they actually built an AMC 360 in 1991.
Guess they were just assembling left over parts.

Im pretty sure they were ready to discontinue the Grands for a while before '91. I just checked my door tag and I feel like a poser- my "91" Grand was built in Sept of '90

I pulled a 5.9 block out of a '91. Didn't look close enough at anything else to know when it was built. My '89 had a 360 block in it and the few things I did look closely at were all built/assembled in '89.

replacment motors were marked 5.9 so it dont mean anything.that and most 91's were left over retaged 89's and 90's.

My guess probably not any 91 build date motors. Components like engines are generally built well beforehand and warehoused till needed. Since Chryco knew the FSJ was ending with the 91 model year they most likely built enough 360's in 1990 to cover their planned 91 GW production run which would have started in July/Aug of 90.

As soon as Iacoca took the reins in 1986/87 he began axing FSJs. and AMC cars...The J-truck became extinct in 87. the AMC cars...including the Eagle...were murdered...then the "Eagle" brand was filled by a stupid jap car. Mitsubishi I think. Then the $30k Grand Wags were next in line.
Your "91" is a "91" if the VIN and registration says it is. alot of vehicles were built in the last few months of the calendar year preceding the vehicle's model year. I have a 1975 "76" Wag body and had a 1978 "79" Wag. Funny enough all 3 of my previous J20s were built within 4 months of each other from Jan, March, and April 1979.

Normal. Model year change over on the assembly line is in Jul-Aug so yours built in Sept 90 means it was built as a 91 model year.

pretty sure all factory motors after 87 or so were cast 5.9 from the factory. Im fairly certain that my Jeep has the original motor. Just replaced the timing chain and the amount of slack would be on par for 135k miles.

My '89 was built in November '88, and yes, that is perfectly normal... I was surprised to see a 1987 date stamp on my rear differential though.

My engine has 1971 block and heads, from the factory! The engine tag says march 15, 1972 and the vehicle tag says April 1972.
I bet the engines and/or parts sat in a warehouse for a few months before they were assembled into a vehicle.

Also typical, since you cannot assemble the final product until the parts have been built.
