There are 2 wires clipped into the alternator - red and black. The black wire disappears into the harness. The red wire is spliced into the yellow 14guage fusible link wire on the battery + side of the solenoid. Is this correct?

The yellow one is most likey the one that goes to one side of the amp guage and then the other side of the gauge feeds the fuse panel. The yellow one should be of significant size.
to bypass take the inst cluster partly out bolt the ring terminals together that are currnently going to the amp guage. Wrap real good in tape.
Run a BIG wire from the output of the alternator to the positive side of the battery. Dont remove the little black wire from the alternator. It is most likely the field wire. If you remove it either the current from the alternator wont be controlled or the alternator wont output anything.
hope this helps.
oh and get the heck rid of the fusable link. You can repalace it with a big fuse if you want.Terry
