John from South Carolina. Screamin j10

    Hello Everyone !!!
Im John and im in Travelers Rest SC. I have a 1973 j10, 360 auto with the lowrange. I pulled it from a field in 2015, rebuilt the engine, put tires on it, and scrubbed it down with 3M scrubbing compound. My transfercase recently lost high range, so i thought i would join up here as i begin getting into this...
The 360 now has an Edelbrock Intake, Carb, cam, shaved heads, and is scary powerful. Being a 1973 it is difficult to find lift kits for it, therefore the factory setup is very stiff offroad, however it handles great on the road. No play in the steering, corners well....
Im going to see whats going on in the transcase and that will determine if i pull it for a rebuild or what...
Depending on that i may go with a two wheel drive street rod..... until i have the case rebuilt - John

Hi John, welcome and yeah you're going to have trouble finding parts for a 73 J-10 in the vendors parts books/data base. The J-10/20 model designations didn't come out till 1974. A 73 will be either a J-3000 or J-4000. When searching for new parts it's good to give the vendor the full/complete model designation. Such as J-4500, 4600, 4700 etc. The base 3000 or 4000 number is just the wheelbase designation. There should be a build sticker on the drivers door jamb giving the exact model or you can get/figure it via the VIN. The complete model number is based on how it was ordered/GVWR. J-4500= 5000GVWR, 4600= 6000 GVWR etc. 4500/3500's have a different rear axle than the higher numbers.

Pictures or it didn't happen. Welcome to the madness.

Lost High Range? Please tell more. We do have a lost and found box in the lobby next to the coffee pot and cookie jar.
