258 to 360 t-18?

I got a 258 (15,000 OM), that came out of a 76 j10 that was bolted up to a t18. My question is that, (besides new frame mounts), would the 258 bolt up to my 81 cherokee that has the 360 with a t18? The 360 is fried, and if the 258 wont bolt up i'm gonna go chevy 350. But with money times, cheaper to go with the nice 258, witch i dont mind at all.

Where does the shifter come up through the cab floor? Which transfer case do you have? Is there a spacer between the bellhousing and the T-18? Your drivetrain isn't factory for a 1981 J-10, so it's hard to comment without knowing what you have.

The 360 to 258 swap is a lot harder than you'd expect. Jeep accommodated the difference in the length of the two engines by using two different lengths of T-18. The input shafts and bell-to-transmission adapters are different lengths, by about 4 inches. To deal with this, you either have to move the transmission and transfer case around, or swap to the right transmission.

This has been discussed a lot in the past. If you search old posts, you'll find a lot to read.

it has the spacer, 4 inches i think, the shifter comes up right in the middle of the floor about 3-4 inches from the dash, plenty of shifting room, looks like it was never moved from stock. my tc is drivers side. Yea, i'm reading as much threads as i can right now.
